    Cesare Borgia was an Italian politician and condottiero in the late 15th century. He was an illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI and came from the Spanish House of Borgia. After initially entering the church and becoming a cardinal, he resigned his position and became a condottiero for King Louis XII of France around 1500. He occupied Milan and Naples during the Italian Wars but was unable to retain power after his father's death. According to Machiavelli, this was not due to a lack of foresight but because he created a new pope.
