Exercises for Chapter 3

Essential Beliefs: Schooling

1. The authors say "areas of performance, repertoires, and matching" are elements that
define professional knowledge in any field. What does that mean?
a. This means that the education of a teacher is never over. Being a teacher
involves constant evolution, and learning skills that can help in every
classroom setting. To be able to master different skills and mindsets
helps gain the results trying to be obtained for the students, the
classroom, and the curriculum.

2. What impact does the "repertoires and matching" view of professional knowledge
have on Adult Professional Culture? Why?
a. The impact of having a “repertoires and matching” view on professional
knowledge is an important one. If teachers come together, they begin to
come up with so many different strategies to learn one thing. Since they
are so eager to do this it creates an environment where teachers come
together to share their ideas. This creates a professional environment
where they can design lessons together and other assignments for the
students.

3. What is your reaction to: "The total environment of the school has a powerful effect
on students' learning"? Why?
a. I strongly agree with the statement above, for the environment of the
school to be effective the students need to be shown that example of
teamwork and bonding. They need to know they have teachers that will
do what is best for them by working all together. If the teachers come
together with lessons, and assessments and can overcome
disagreements they create a united environment.

4. How does an individual teacher contribute to the overall environment of a school?

Provide examples.
a. An individual teacher contributes to the overall environment of the
school by paying close attention to those students who are struggling in
certain subjects. More times than not the students that struggle tend to
stop participating in class because they do not have that spark. So, you
can find other ways to teach the lesson to target what you know if that
students’ strengths. Paying close attention to how each of your students
learn even by doing a survey in the beginning of the school year to see
who the hands on learners are or the more visual, or auditorial learners
show the students that you care about them, and want to do whatever it
takes to see them succeed.
