5-Go Math Grade Level: 2

One Dollar
Central Focus
Essential Question: How do I show one dollar in a variety of ways?

2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters,

Standard
dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.

Learning
Students will be able to show one dollar in a variety of ways.
Objective

Play coins and dollar bills (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) Pencil,
Materials
Coin chart

Some children may not understand that a one dollar bill has a value
of 100¢. Do the following activity to deepen children’s understanding
of one dollar. Show children a penny and ask them to name the
coin. Ask: What is the value of 1 penny? 1¢ Display a stack of 10
pennies. Ask: What is the value of 10 pennies? 10¢ Display 10
stacks of 10 pennies. Have children count by tens to find the value
Purpose
of 10 stacks of 10 pennies. 100¢ Explain that a one dollar bill has
the same value as 10 stacks of 10 pennies, or 100 pennies. Discuss
with children how dollar bills and coins are both useful and why
there is a need for both. Point out that it is easier to carry dollar bills
in a wallet or pockets than to carry the same money amount in
pennies.

First, we will open the lesson with an interactive video from GO

MATH Lesson 7.5 called “One Dollar”. This video will show the
students how many of each coin will total up to 100 cents. Ex;four
quarters, 10 dimes, 100 pennies, etc.. Students will volunteer to
Instruction
answer the questions on the whiteboard while explaining their
thinking.

Next, we will go over two examples. The first example will be

modeled by the teacher, then the students will assist with the
second example. The two questions will be How can we count by 10
to make 100? and how can we count by 5 to make 100?. Finally, the
students will work on a third example on their own (teacher will
decide if further practice is needed.)

• Distribute play dollar bills to children. • Discuss with children how a

dollar bill and a coin are alike, and how they are different. • Tell
children a dollar has a value of 100¢ or $1.00. Write $1.00 on the
board and label the dollar sign and the decimal point. Explain that
the dollar sign shows that the number represents money. The
decimal point separates the dollars from the cents. • Tell children
that the dollar sign and the cent symbol are never used together to
write a money amount. Either symbol can be used, but never at the
same time.

Students will work independently on pages 492 and 493 in their Go

Learning Task Math workbooks. Students will be required to group amounts of
change to equal 100 cents = $1

Math discussion: How were you able to find coins to make 100
Closing
cents or $1? (allow each group to share)

During independent work, I will observe each students’ process and

answers and take notes.
Assessments
During closing students will turn and talk, (How did you choose coins
to show a money amount in different ways?) then each group will
share out.

● Students will be provided with laminated mini-anchor charts

with coin names and worth.
● Students may use play money to help them illustrate and
Differentiation discover ways to solve the problems.
● Students who finish first will be able to come up with their
own amounts to figure out with each other.
● Pair fluent English speakers with English Learners.
