1.3 INTRODUCTION:

The Sun is an inexhaustible, reliable and non - polluting source of power.

Since the inception of life on earth, the only energy that was available
came from the Sun. It is only in the last 250 years that mankind has
trapped the fossil energy resources accumulated over hundreds of million
of years. The time is now approaching when mankind will again depend
upon the Sun as dominant energy source. We all know that fuels are not
going to last forever. The oil and natural gas may last for another 50-60
years if the present rate of depletion is not accelerated and Coal may last
for another 250 years.

Solar Photovoltaic Technology is one of the main routes to provide major

share of the renewable energy technologies needed in the future. This is
because:

 Solar radiation is the largest energy resource. Approximately 1% of

the world's desert area utilized by solar Photovoltaic plants would
be sufficient to generate the world's entire electricity demand
anticipated in the year 2001.
 The solar energy is more evenly distributed in the world than wind
or bio - mass.
 It is well proven and demonstrated technology.

50 MW SOLAR POWER PLANT

 It promises to be the most cost effective renewable power at high

volume of production. In addition, the solar Photovoltaic
technology offers other advantages.

Advantages of Solar Power Plants:

 No recurring fuel cost.

 Clean, silent and no moving parts.
 Modular
 Reliable
 Environmentally sound, does not contribute to greenhouse gas
emission. ISO 14000 recognizes use of environment friendly
technologies.
 Low maintenance
 Can be installed at the point of use and prevents transmission line
losses Solar panels have life in excess to 25 years and can withstand
high winds, severe hail impact, high humility, freezing and high
ambient temperatures.

2. TECHNICAL DETAILS & SPECIFICATIONS

Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant: Photovoltaic comprises the

technology to convert sunlight directly into electricity. The term “photo”
means light and “voltaic,” means electricity. A photovoltaic (PV) cell, also
known as “solar cell,” is a semiconductor device that generates electricity
when light falls on it. Since its first commercial use in powering orbital
satellites of the US space programs in the 1950s, PV has made significant
progress with total photovoltaic module industry growing at more than
40% in the past decade.

2.1 Grid Connect Solar Power Plant:

A grid connect solar power plant is connected to large independent grid,

usually the State Electricity Board grid. The solar energy generated is fed
to the grid by means of a Grid Connect Inverter which converts DC to AC.
Grid Inverters are special type of inverters used in Grid Connect Solar
Power Plants which convert direct current to alternating current and feeds
the generated power to the grid connected. They may be also called
synchronous inverters since they operate in parallel with the grid. The grid
connect inverters are designed to convert solar power to grid electricity
that can be used by the local loads or sold to local power company. In
order to operate, the inverter must have grid power available and
connected. It will not provide backup power if the grid fails. The inverter
will automatically synchronize to grid.
