BSECE 5A CABLE CATEGORIES CATEGORIES DESCRIPTION CAT 5 • One of the older categories of copper wire data cable • Year 1995 • 10 to 100 Mbps at a distance up to 100 meters
CAT 5E • Less crosstalk and noise
• 1 Gigabit speed
CAT 6 • Launched in 2002
• Copper wire is being more tightly than CAT 5 • Became dominant cable in the market • It can boast Gigabit Ethernet at a distance of 100m and 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 55m • Compatible with CAT 5 Cabling • Bandwidth of 250 MHz CATEGORIES DESCRIPTION CAT 6A • Double the bandwidth of CAT 6 of 500 Mhz • Ratified for 10 Gigabit Ethernet • 90 meters with patch and 100 meters for direct link
CAT 7 • Thicker layer of shielding
• Reduces the deterioration of data transmissions • It can transmit up to 40Gb at a distance of 50 meters; 100 Gb at 15 meters • Reduced the flexibility • It lacks total backwards compatibility
CAT 8 • 40 Gbps and a bandwidth capacity of 2000Mhz
• 30 meters limit • It is more recommended for connecting short distances in a network STRAIGHT-THROUGH, CROSSOVER, AND ROLLOVER WIRING CABLE DESCRIPTION WIRING DIAGRAM STRAIGHT THROUGH Straight-through cable is a type of CAT5 with RJ-45 connectors at each end, and each has the same pin out. It is in accordance with either the T568A or T568B standards. It uses the same color code throughout the LAN for consistency. This type of twisted-pair cable is used in LAN to connect a computer or a network hub such as a router. It is one of the most common types of network cable.
CROSSOVER A Crossover cable is a type of CAT 5
where one end isT568A configuration and the other end as T568BConfiguration. In this type of cable connection, Pin 1 is crossed with Pin 3, and Pin 2 is crossed with Pin 6. Crossover cable is used to connect two or more computing devices. The internal wiring of crossover cables reverses the transmission and receive signals. It is widely used to connect two devices of the same type: e.g., two computers or two switches to each other. CABLE DESCRIPTION WIRING DIAGRAM ROLLOVER CABLE Rollover cable is a type of null- modem cable that is used to connect a computer terminal to a router's console port. This cable is typically flat (and has a light blue color) to help distinguish it from other types of network cabling. It gets the name rollover because the pinouts on one end are reversed from the other, as if the wire had been rolled over and you were viewing it from the other side.
