ASSEMBLY
NUT
1. REPLACEMENT OF DRAG LINK BALL STUD DUST SEAL
BALL STUD 1. As a general rule, replace the drag link assembly, if
the ball joints dust seal is damaged. If there is no
DUST SEAL
GUIDE play, mud or water in the joint, just replace the seal.
Remove the dust seal with a screw driver.
2. Apply lithium molybdenum sulfide grease to the seal
lip of the new dust seal and using the guide and nut
SM12-026A gently push the seal onto the socket.
Fig. 11
Take care not to damage the dust seal.
Inject lithim molybdenum grease from the lubrication
fitting.
(Do not allow grease to get on the tapered part).
Grease quantity: 6.5 g (0.23 oz)
Special Tool: Guide, Nut (09657 - 1610, 920914 -
142)

2. INSTALL THE PITMAN ARM TO THE GEAR BOX.

1. Install in the order of dust cover, pitman arm, and
spring washer, then tighten the nuts to the specified
torque.
Tightening Torque: 3,000 - 4,000 kg·cm (217 - 289 Ib·ft)
NOTE: Align the match marks on the sector shaft
and pitman arm.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALLATION OF POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AS-

→ SEMBLY
WHEN HANDLING THE POWER STEERING COMPO-
NENTS, ALWAYS KEEP THE PARTS AND AREA
CLEAN. WHEN INSTALLING, TAKE SUFFICIENT CARE
→ THAT NO FOREIGN MATTER ENTERS THE SYSTEM

CIRCUITRY.
SM12-339 1. After tilting the cab forward, align the universal joint
Fig. 14
assembly with the sliding shaft. Then install the power
steering gear box assembly to the bracket and tighten
them with specified torque.
Tightening Torque: 1,500 - 2,300 kg·cm (109 - 166 Ib·ft)

2. Install the drag link.

a. Connect the link with the knuckle arm and with the
pitman arm.
NOTE: ● When handling the drag link, do not dam-
age the dust seal.
● Do not allow grease to get on the tapered
part.

SM12-318A
Fig. 15
b. Tighten the slotted nuts of the ball studs at both ends
of the link to the specified torque and then secure
the nuts with the cotter pins.

→ 3. Connect the low pressure pipe and the high pres-

sure pipe.
NOTE: ● Watch that foreign matter does not enter
the lines or get on the seal’s surface.
● When handling the line above, take care

not to damage the plastic coat covering.
● Be sure to turn the nut in the tightening
direction when tightening the tapered
SM12-339 joint. Attempting to adjust the angle of
Fig. 17 the elbow joint by turning it in a loosen-
ing direction may result in fluid leakage.
Tightening torque: 600 - 700 kg·cm (44 - 50 Ib·ft)

2. FILL THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR WITH THE

POWER STEERING FLUID. DO NOT OVERFILL THE
RESERVOIR.
Power steering fluid: Refer to RECOMMENDED
LUBRICANTS LIST.
NOTE: For air bleeding and final checking of power
steering system, refer to chapter 67 “POWER
STEERING”.
SM67-433
Fig. 18 WARNING
When checking the fluid level of the power steer-
ing reservoir or adding fluid to the reservoir, be
careful not to contaminate fluid by letting dirt fall
into the reservoir. Fluid contaminated with dirt can
result in a shorter life of the pump, and can result
in personal injury and/or property damage due to
improper operation of relief valve, control valve, etc.

3. CHECKING THE STEERING WHEEL POSITION.

NOTE: Check that the steering wheel is in the cor-
rect position when the wheels point straight
ahead.
If the steering wheel is not positioned prop-
erly, the various meters will not be easily vis-
ible.

Grease: Refer to RECOMMENDED LUBRICANTS
LIST.
When replacing parts: 30 cc (27 gr)
When replenishing: 15 cc (14 gr)
● Right after changing or replenishing grease,
vertical adjustments of the steering wheel will

being discharged from the grooves and it is
not abnormal.

2. Apply lithium base disulfide molybdenum grease for
