HOW TO USE AN ADJUSTABLE WRENCH

An adjustable wrench is a wrench used to create torsional force and also has adjustable jaws in order to
have wider use. Using the thumb screw adjustment, it is easier than ever to clamp down on two parallel
flat surfaces and turn the object, whether your intention was to tighten or loosen the object. The
adjustable wrench is invaluable due to its versatility and its wide use across the shop. In the outlined
certified easy steps below, you will learn how to use this vital tool.

Tools and materials needed:

 An Adjustable Wrench
 An object that needs to be turned

Parts of an Adjustable Wrench

1. Locate and Grab Wrench

2. Locate an object, such as a bolt, that needs to be turned
3. Ensure the adjustable wrench is the correct tool for the job
4. Take the wrench, jaws open wide enough to fit around the bolt, then using the thumb screw
adjustment, tighten the adjustable wrench’s jaws on two parallel flat surfaces.
5. Determine whether the object (presumably a bolt of sorts) needs to be tightened or loosened.
object might be damaged by loosening or tightening when the object wasn’t
meant to do that. Most bolts abide by the laws of “lefty-loosey, rightey-tightey”
6. Grab the handle of the wrench and begin moving the wrench in a clockwise or counterclockwise
circle depending on needs.
7. Stop and loosen wrench once the object is loosened or tightened to where it needs to be.
8. Put away the wrench

Adjustable wrenches can be found in nearly every shop. Provided any manual tightening or loosening
needs to be done, there will be a wrench of some sort around. Always be sure you are doing the
correct procedure.
