driver would be a gross inaccuracy
too. Widely considered by many to
be one of the finest drivers of all time, he was a
true legend, in every sense of the word. Proof of
this, however, isn’t available if you pore over the
racing statistics. Moss never won a Formula 1
world championship – something that seems to
have unfortunately defined him – and he never
won at Le Mans either.
Statistics, however, don’t tell you everything.
They are quantitative and not qualitative. To
understand the true skill and genius of Moss, you
must understand the circumstances in which he
raced, the competition he took on, the relative
pace of the cars he drove, and look beyond the
numbers. But who do we ask? Someone who
knows the sport well, of course; someone who
knew the skill levels of all the top-flight drivers at
the time, and had deep insight into their varied
driving styles and relative pace.
How about Enzo Ferrari? As obsessed with
fast drivers as he was with fast cars, the ‘old man’
actually authored a 500-page book (Piloti, Che
Gente) on only drivers or ‘Piloti’, right from the
