1 Pre-operation Inspection of Crane Nil  Conduct a visual inspection of the Crane. Supervisor
 Carry out daily checks in accordance with the Crane Driver
crane manufacturer’s instructions.
 Record inspections in the crane log book.
 Any faults identified need to be reported to the
Site Manager and the Crane NOT used until all
faults have been repaired.
 Person responsible for operating the crane must
hold an appropriate crane ticket.
 Determine the weight of the load to be lifted and
ensure the capacity of the Crane (in relation to
extension) is not exceeded.

 Plan the travel path and ensure route is clear of
obstructions and maintain a safe distance from
all site workers.
Overhead power lines, potential electrocution.
 Check for and ensure no overhead power lines
are within the following distances; 3 meters from
distribution lines and 8 meters from transmission
lines. Additional control measures are required if
the work is within the above distances and the
task is NOT to continue until adequate controls
are in place.

3 Operate and mobilise the Crane Collision with other site vehicles and workers,  Before operating the Crane check for and 3 C 13 Crane Driver
potential crush injuries ensure all ground workers and other vehicles are
well clear of the work area.
 Ensure reverse beepers are audible and
flashing lights are working at all times.
 Operating speed when driving the Crane
must be done at creeping or extremely slow
speed (walking speed).
 Ground surfaces must be inspected to
ensure sufficient compaction to operate on, if in
doubt seek advice from the Site Manager.

4 Lifting Falling materials, crush injuries to riggers and/or  Load attachments to crane to be completed 3 C 13 Crane Driver

 Choose a sling of adequate capacity and
determine the best means of attachment.
 Position the lifting assembly over the centre
of gravity and aim for a direct lift.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: Crawler Crane

General Public / Traffic interaction, potential  Ensure all workers, including the riggers are
collision and crush injuries well clear before lifting the load.
 Smoothly and gradually raise the load
150mm off the ground and hold. Check the
slinging and balance of the load.
 When the load is stable, continue the lift until
it is high enough to clear all objects in its path.
 Tag Lines are to be used if the load is raised
above shoulder height.
 Maintain visual sight of crane driver at all
times. If the rigger cannot see the crane driver,
lifting is to stop immediately.

5 Travelling Falling materials, crush injuries to riggers and/or  When travelling with a suspended load, 3 C 13 Crane Driver
other workers brake and accelerate gently to minimise load
swing. Rigger
 Ensure load is lowered as far as possible
before travelling with load.
 Maintain visual sight of crane driver at all
times. If the rigger cannot see the crane driver,
General Public / Traffic interaction, potential travelling is to stop immediately.
collision and crush injuries  Ensure all workers are well clear of the
crane and load. Crane driver is to stop if
obstructions or workers are in close proximity to
travel route.
 If loading / unloading in a public space, a
spotter / traffic controller must be positioned in
the immediate work area for the duration of the
task.
 Where required, barricading and signage
must be positioned to warn pedestrians and
drivers of the crane activity.
 Crane driver is to give way to all other traffic
and pedestrians, unless managed by a traffic
controller.
