How would you describe the concept of public health to your friend who knows nothing
about it?

Your Answer:

I would first take those two words of "Public" and "Health" and ask them to give me what
their definition. Then combining both words together and their definitions I would flesh
out to describe that Public Health in their own terms so that it builds on a preconceived
idea that already was present in their minds. Surely the public consists of people and
health is how much energy or wellness a person has. I must also be clear that public
health refers to not just individuals but entire groups or populations. I like to compare
Public Health as the conditions that affect the daily life of a community. I also use two
ideas that helped me learn about Public Health. That is how Psychology focuses on an
individual's behavior in their environment versus Sociology on how people behave as a
group in the group environment. Public Health is the study of a group and how that
group interacts with other entities and resources to determine health and wellness.

I think another way to describe is by comparing a stadium full of lets say Dodger fans as
our population and their health of those closer to the field are having a better time since
they get free hot dogs and ice cold beverages since they paid a lot more money for their
seats. Each seat cost a particular amount and some people can afford nicer seats
closer to the field than those that could not since their resources such as education or
work or schooling was different than the next person. Everyone in that stadium came to
watch the game of baseball being played but the perspectives of each subgroup or
section will be different. IE a higher chance of those sitting behind the the fence have a
higher chance of catching a foul ball versus other seat locations.

Question 2

Describe your own social determinants of health in detail.

Your Answer:

I like to compare social determinants of health loosely on concepts of Traditional

Chinese Medicine. Where the goal of those that do practice Tai Chi are interested in
being their own best version of themselves through different energy channeling
exercises. Everyone is born with a certain amount of energetic potential and an ideal
person's goal in life is to utilize their genetic potentials to the fullest.

My own social determinant of health includes the amount of stress I have consistently
chosen to undertake since I quit working in the travel business to focus on school and a
career in healthcare. I grew up in a very natural and nutrition based family where we
were taught how to read nutritional labels and keep away from processed foods. I am
from a larger than most family with a mom, dad and six children total. When I was a kid
my siblings and often had to share things like bath water, bars of soap, hair brushes
and even beverage cups between us. Of course so many germs were shared too that
our immune systems were primed when we started school. My father and mother grew
up in families with extended cousins and five siblings each so the amount of shared
germs and diseases was about the same but different. Another example of social
determinants include the patterns involved in home life and with that certain stresses
that come along.

Access to a medical professionals such as a Doctor, birth control, and medicines all
play a large part of my communities public health determinants. I would say along with
these things listed above, an important social determinant is access to fresh food with
plenty of veggies and good proteins. It can be easy to overlook the things in Ventura
County that we take for granted like clean fresh water access. Fresh air with minimal
amounts of pollution in comparison with more central and inland parts of California such
as Bakersfield or Los Angeles. Public parks and public libraries as well as programs for
reading are important for the social longevity of those in our communities as well.
