ABOUT SDGs

• SDGs are the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the world
leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit (Sept 2015), in New
York

• Built on the achievement and experiences of the Millennium Development Goals in

year 2000.

• Focus on 17 Goals and 169 targets

• The SDGs, (Global Goals), are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the
planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

ABOUT SDGs
• The SDGs, (Global Goals), are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet
and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

• 17 Goals build on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, while including new
areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption,
peace and justice, among other priorities

• Work in the spirit of partnership and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve
life, in a sustainable way, for future generations.

• They provide clear guidelines and targets for all countries to adopt in accordance with their
own priorities and the environmental challenges of the world at large

Innovative solutions to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On 25th September 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure
prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved
over the next 15 years (total 169 targets).
Water place an imp role in all the goals

TA R G E T O F G O A L 6
1. By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

2. By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special
attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations

3. By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals
and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally

4. By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of
freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity

5. By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as
appropriate

6. By 2030, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes

7. By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-
related activities and programs, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling
and reuse technologies

8. Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

Current spending on new water

infrastructure in developing and
emerging countries is very roughly
$80 billion a year. This will have to
more than double over the next 20–25
years, to around $180 billion.

• More than 5 major water disruption

incident had occurred in the Klang Valley,
Selangor in 2020 due to spillage of
industrial waste at river upstream, and
thus affects the downstream water intakes.

• Water disruption affects 1.2 million of

water users in Klang Valley.

CHALLENGES: DO WE HAVE ENOUGH WATER?

• Malaysia is not running out of water, but water is running out of Malaysia. The Same
with some other countries.

• CR/Downstream reservoir can be a potential long term and sustainable solution for
water resources in Malaysia. The Same with some other countries.

• The present river runoff and dam system utilizes about only 3.7% of the available water,
with most of the remaining water discharged into the sea.

• Water shortage is primarily an issue of storage rather than availability.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR
COASTAL RESERVOIRS RESEARCH
(IACRR)

• IACRR - founded in January 2017 in Australia.

• IACRR inaugurated - 16th Aug 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

• International non-profit organization set up to promote and develop

Coastal Reservoirs (CR).

• Welcomes members from various sectors such as engineers,

scientists, researchers, industry players, suppliers, contractors,
developers, water agencies, operators and decision makers.
I NTE RNATI ONAL ASSOC I ATI ON F OR
COASTAL RESERVOIRS RESEARCH
(IACRR)

• CR is a paradigm shift in water resources development from storing

water in inland dams to storing freshwater by the coast.

• CR converts floodwater into valuable water resources closer to the

demand centres.

• IACRR will be the platform for sharing of knowledge and experience

to ensure successful implementation of CR worldwide.

• Chapters: Australia, Malaysia, India, China

IACRR’S MISSION
Mission
> Initiation of CR by leading the profession in setting standards
and guidelines to ensure that CR is built and operated safely,
efficiently, economically, and are environmentally sustainable and
socially beneficial.

> Assisting coastal cities to meet their water demand.

> Inspiring future coastal city development by integrating water, land

and manpower resources, hence enhancing urban expansion and
quality of life.
IACRR’S VISION
Vision :

> Solving water shortage issues in major cities

worldwide.

> To be the world’s leading organization, dedicated

to advancing all aspects of CR and promoting the
sustainable development and management of
surface water otherwise lost to the sea.
