Laboratory
Complete Blood Count
A complete blood count, also known as a full blood count, is a
set of medical laboratory tests that provide information about the
cells in a person's blood. The CBC indicates the counts of white blood
cells, red blood cells and platelets, the concentration of hemoglobin,
and the hematocrit (Medline plus, 2020).

The patient is tested for a complete blood count since the

patient is undergoing medication therapy. The physician Ordered a
Complete blood count to monitor the side effects of the prescription
medications.

CBC results show normal values except for a decrease in white blood cell count. The patient is
taking Clozapine to treat schizophrenia, Clozapine has been shown to be very helpful in the treatment of
schizophrenia and has the ability to lower the amount of white blood cells in the body. Neutrophils are a
type of white blood cell that is specifically affected. Clozapine-induced agranulocytosis is a side effect of
this drug. Clozapine is thought to be metabolized into the nitrenium ion. Agranulocytosis may occur
when this ion binds to neutrophils. Agranulocytosis can be mediated by antineutrophil antibodies.

Basic metabolic Panel Test (BMP)

The basic metabolic panel (BMP) is a blood test that tests a variety of substances. The BMP is a useful
tool for determining the current state of the body's metabolism. The BMP gives details on the blood
sugar (glucose) level, electrolyte and fluid balance, and kidney health. Abnormal findings, particularly
when they are combined, may suggest a problem that needs to be addressed and can necessitate
further testing.

The patient is tested for a basic metabolic panel test since the client’s parents are diabetic. With the test
provided, the health care team can monitor if the client might have diabetes that can bring forth
complications to the patient and a contributing factor with the patient’s high blood pressure.

BMP results show normal values except for an elevated blood glucose level. An elevated blood glucose
level indicates hyperglycemia or a defining characteristic of diabetes. This is because the body is not
properly using the hormone insulin. This occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin or can
also happen when the body is unable to absorb insulin properly or develops a resistance to insulin
entirely. This indicates that lifestyle and hereditary factors are contributors to the patient.

Lipid Panel Test

The amount of particular fat molecules called lipids in the blood is measured by the lipid panel. It tests a
variety of substances, including many forms of cholesterol, as a panel test. By measuring cholesterol in
the blood, the lipid panel aids in the evaluation of cardiovascular health. Too much cholesterol can clog
the arteries and blood vessels, causing damage and increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and
heart attack.

The patient is tested for a lipid panel test since the patient is experiencing high blood pressure. This is to
Identify how the patient’s body reflects towards the findings and to know the specific connection with
the patient’s case. It is important in order to monitor the patient since this can be detrimental in severe
cases and would be a contributing factor with the patient’s condition that would complicate in more
severe conditions.

Lipid panel test results show that the total cholesterol is at borderline as well as the HDL and LDL. This
could mean that the patient is at risk for a heart disease or stroke if there will be no dietary changes
applied. A borderline low HDL is an indicator as well for the risk of developing heart disease. On the
other hand, LDL and triglycerides level is at borderline High which means the patient is at risk for plaque
buildup or atherosclerosis if not treated. This may also be a risk factor for coronary artery disease and
stroke if not given importance. Total cholesterol HDL ratio is within a normal range.
