Indirect boosting cold water system to a storage header

Boosted water system is needed when the water tank is located at a low level
particularly in medium and high-level buildings. There is often insufficient mains pressure
for medium and high-level buildings to supply water directly to the upper floors. This creates
the need for an efficient system that pushes the water upward to distribute it effectively. This
system requires booster pump from break tank. Break tanks are installed to support the
system when the supply of the mains is inadequate. Besides, a break pressure cistern is
required on down service to limit the head or pressure on the lower fittings to a maximum of
30m which is approximately 300kPa. The drinking water header pipe or storage tank delivers
drinking water to the upper floors. As this empties or water reaches a predetermined low
level, the pipeline switch engages the duty pump. When the supply of the mains is
interrupted, a float switch in the break tank prevents the pumps from dry running. The
various pipe sections are fitted with isolating valves to facilitate maintenance and repairs.

There are a few advantages and disadvantages of indirect boosting water supply to a
storage header. One of the advantages of indirect boosting water supply to a storage header is
water can be supplied to upper floors of a building continuously. Moreover, the indirect
boosting water supply to a storage header contains a break-pressure cistern which can limit
pressure on the pipe fittings. Limited pressure is important because excessive pressure in the
pipe fittings can lead to burst of pipe fittings and leaking of water will damage walls, floors
or belongings in a building until the water is shut off. The disadvantages of the indirect
boosting water supply are it involves complex plumbing installation and requires more costs.

Water Meter

Water meters are installed at the discretion of the local water authority.
Water meters are located for inspection in the most unblocked area or easy reach area. Water
meter’s main function is to record the amount of water being consumed for billing purposes
in a building. Installing water meter can encourage water consumers in a building to save
water as every drops of water costs money. There are a few types of water meter stand made
of different materials to use in different situations. For meter stand with diameter less than
100mm, stainless steel material should be used while mild steel material or flexible coupling
should be used for meter stand with diameter of more than 100mm. In situation of meter
stand with diameter less than 50mm, it shall be fitted with lockable valve.
