1. Place numbers by each chromosome pair. How many chromosome pairs are
there?

22 pairs of autosomal chromosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes

2. How many chromosomes in total are there?

46 chromosomes

3. Circle the sex chromosomes. How many sex chromosomes are there?

1 pair

4. Is this individual a male or female?

The sex of an individual is determined by a pair of sex chromosomes.

5. How were you able to determine your answer for #4?

Females ordinarily have two of a similar sort of sex chromosome (XX), and are
known as the homogametic sex. Male ordinarily have two various types of sex
chromosomes (XY), and are known as the heterogametic sex.

6. Color blindness is a sex-linked recessive disorder on the X chromosome. If the

allele “b” is used to denote color blindness, circle the genotype(s) that correctly
represent(s) a female that is color blind.

BB Bb bb XBXB XBYB XBXb XbY XbXb XbYb XBY

7. Color blindness is a sex-linked recessive disorder on the X chromosome. If the

allele “b” is used to denote color blindness, circle the genotype(s) that correctly
represent(s) a male that is color blind.

BB Bb bb XBXB XBYB XBXb XbY XbXb XbYb XBY

8. Bob is color blind, but he knows that neither of his parents were color blind. He is
wondering if he received the gene for color blindness from his mother, his father,
or both of his parents. What would you tell Bob? Show a punnet square to prove
your answer!

XB Y
XBXB XBY
XB

Xb XBXb XbY

XB is the trait for normal vision

Xb is the trait for color blindness
XBXB is a female with normal vision
XBXb is a female heterozygonal for color blindness
XBY is a male with normal vision
XbY is a male with color blindness

9. Consider the below Punnet square cross. Explain how could you use it to
determine which parent determines the biological sex of a baby--- is it the
mother, father, or both? Why?

X Y
X XX XY

X XX XY

When an egg with X-chromosome fuses with a sperm cell with an X

chromosome, the resulting baby is a female but when an egg with an X
chromosome fuses with a sperm cell with a Y chromosome, the resulting baby is
a male.
What makes the difference in both sexes is the Y chromosome from the man,
therefore the father determines the biological sex of a baby.
