THE PRETORIA EYE TASK 1

“PRETORIA HIT BY AN EARTHQUAKE 4 DEAD AND 155 SERIOSLY INJURED”

In a devastating turn of events, Pretoria has been struck by an

earthquake. What seemed to be a warm day in the capital city
quickly turned sour when four unsuspecting people were
crushed by a building that collapsed on them and they
succumbed. The Richter scale showed that the quake was of an
amplitude of 6.6, which has been scientifically shown to cause
serious damage to buildings and people living in highly
populated areas.
The estimated economic damage at the time of reporting was Ghallo images:Mamelodi
estimated to be approximately twenty five billion rands (ZAR25
BILLION) a senior economist in government Dr Mabona said
this event will affect the economy of South Africa immensely
and disturb government business since the union buildings,
reserve bank and new parliament building where affected.
Other areas affected are the RDP houses which were
constructed for the already vulnerable in Mamelodi east.
4 people died, 155 were injured and at least 1000 families
where left homeless by the earthquake. A senior academic in
the science faculty Professor Nyoka said the history of
earthquakes in Gauteng is explained by history of mining which
causes cracks and therefore triggers earthquakes.
The central descision making body has convened a meeting to
try and solve the problems caused by the meeting, already the
planning department has pleaded with the presidency to issue
a state of disaster statement to enable quick response of
external aid such as Nongovernmental organisations and
religious groups.

OBITUARY
END OF ERA: PULENG MOGOENG DIES AT 54 DUE TO PRETORIA EARTHQUAKE

Puleng Gloria Mogoeng a mother of two (2) died
at the age of 54 after sustaining serious head
injuries caused by the Pretoria earthquake of
August 2020. The community described her as a
committed, disciplined and hardworking
women who had care for people regardless of
race and culture.
She worked as a nurse at Kalafong Hospital for
several years where she held different senior
positions and she cultivated a vibrant work
ethic amongst junior staff and the overall
hospital staff. She is succeeded by her two
children Thabang Mogoeng (15) Sarah
Mogoeng (18) her son and daughter
respectively.
Describing her mother, Sarah said “Mom was
my pillar of strength whom I could lean on at
any point in time, she was like a best friend who
could listen to my troubles, and she has left a
void in my life that I will never be able to fill”.
Her last born son described her
whilst mourning as a strict woman
who used to buy him presents and
all the toys that he requested.
Puleng played an important role in
the church where she led the choir
and prayer band at St Bernard
Mizeki the Martyr Parish (Saulsville)
women who described her said she
was a warm heart something that
amazed them given that she was a
widow after losing her husband
through an accident.
She was vibrant having participated
in the comrades’ marathon in the
previous years. Puleng grew up in
Mabopane and she did her high
school at Ngaka Moseko.
