1. Subject:
Condense water, seeping along the rotor drive shaft can leak into the drive gearbox,
causing damage to the gears of the gearbox, and in some cases cause the rotor to stop.
2. Modification
A plastic (polyether urethane) ‘umbrella’ shaped sealing is fitted over the drive shaft, deflecting the condense
water. This seal prevents that water can seep between the shaft and the housing. (see fig. 1)
An intermediate solution (see fig. 2) existing of a white, nylon hard seal with an O-ring inserted in an internal
groove, is introduced in production as from May 1998 on.
The final version of the seal 1617 5321-00 will be available as from July 1998.
3. Service action
Fit the seal ring p/n 1617 5321-00 at first opportunity or during next service intervention.
It is not necessary to disassemble the MD for this: The gearbox can be removed from below for fitting this seal.
If traces of oil leakage from gearbox vent hole are found, your immediate action is required. It is advisable to
check the gear condition at this opportunity as well.
Renew the gearbox oil. Roto-M, hypoid gear oil for MD gearbox, can be ordered in 1 litre containers under Atlas
Copco p/n 2908 8506-00.
Remark: Do not forget to remove the plastic plug from gearbox. It is a transport protection and must be removed
when commissioning the MD !
4. Spare parts
Seal p/n 1617 5321-00 fits on the 30 mm diameter shafts of gearboxes p/nrs 1614 7613-80 and 1617 5055-80,
used on MD 100W-MD 200-MD 300-MD 400-MD 600 – MD 1000.
It cannot be used on MD 50 or MD 100A (shaft of gearboxes p/n 1617 5128-80 is 20 mm only). A seal for these
gearboxes will be released shortly.
The temporary seals are fitted ex-factory on the MD’s below as from following serial numbers AIQ 009 619 on.
The other s/nrs listed below are also equipped with the new seal. This table is for indicative purpose.
