Summary
Spinal Cord, Part 1

• The spinal cord is segmented into cervical,

thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal
regions that issue 31 pairs of spinal nerves:
8 cervical; 12 thoracic; 5 lumbar; 5 sacral;
and 1 coccygeal.

• Central gray matter consisting of nerve cell

bodies, and outer white (myelin) matter
which colors the descending and ascending
spinal tracts

Summary
Spinal Cord, Part 1

• Dorsal gray horn contains sensory neurons,

the ventral gray horn motor neurons, and
intermediate gray horn preganglionic
sympathetic neurons.

• The ratio of gray to white matter increases

caudally along the length of the spinal cord.

• Motor neurons in Rexed lamina IX follow

the proximal-distal and flexor-extensor
rules.
