STANDARD SPECIFICATION

FOR

MOSAIC TILES

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY:

A This Section includes Mosaic Tile for floor general application.

1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A The Contractor shall have a Quality Management System that is consistent


with standard industry practices for the goods or services being procured.

B Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced workmanship to perform


tiling works specialized in installing mosaic systems similar to that required
for the project and acceptable to the manufacturer of the mosaic tiles.

C Installer Certification: Obtain written certification certifying that Installer has


over 5 years of experience in installation of mosaic tiles, to perform the
work. Provide a copy of certification for the Owner, prior to awarding
mosaic tiles works contract

D Obtain each color, grade, finish, type, composition, and variety of tile from
a single source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in
appearance and physical properties without delaying progress of the work.

E Obtain setting and grouting materials of a uniform quality from one


manufacturer for each cementitious and admixture component and from
one source or procedure for each aggregate

F Control the quality of items and services to meet the requirements of this
Specification, applicable codes and standards, and other Contract
documents.

1.3 SUBMITTALS:

A. Submit documents for the Owner’s review in accordance with the


Document Submittal Requirements (DSR) form.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:

A. Deliver Mosaic tiles in original, unopened, intact packages, clearly labeled


with information about manufacturer’s name, quantity packed, color, and
item other description.

B. Handle and store packages containing Mosaic tiles avoiding overloading


building structure.

C. Store and handle Mosaic tiles in a way to ensure dryness. Store in a dry,
well-ventilated tight place. Handle and store materials in a manner to avoid
significant or permanent deck deflection.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. General:

1. Mosaic tiles shall be first class grade tiles of mechanically


compressed type, of best quality, locally available, and shall conform
to Egyptian Specification number ES 269-1/2005 requirements,
when tested by an independent testing agency, acceptable to
Owner.

2. The face of the tiles shall be the minimum of 1.2 mm thick for tiles of
30 mm thick. The face material shall consist of one part white or
colored cement to two and half parts, by weight, of dry marble chips.
Marble flakes shall be dry and shall be of size not larger than No. 2
and not smaller than Number 0 if Number 0 flakes are used. The
quantity of Number 0 flakes shall not exceed 20% of the total flakes.
The color and size of flakes to be selected by the Owner. The back
portion of tiles shall consist of one part Portland cement and three
parts of fine sand, by weight.

3. Tiles shall be neatly shaped with straight edges, perfectly flat and
free from defects which affect appearance or serviceability. Tiles
with veins, cracks or defects will be rejected.

4. Mosaic tiles shall be cured for at least three months before use.

5. Mosaic tiles shall be mechanically ground in factory, to a true even


surface.

B. Tiles Dimensions:

1. Mosaic tile shall be factory-fabricated, flat, 30 mm nominal


thickness, 300 x 300 mm square, of pattern and color selected by
Owner from manufacturer’s standard range.

C. Flexural Strength:

1. Minimum average flexural strength of 42 Kg/ cm², with no individual


unit less than 35 Kg/cm².

D. Water Absorption:

1. Maximum average water absorption 6 percent, and for any individual


unit not exceeding 7 percent.

E. Abrasion:

1. Maximum abrasion average of 3.0 mm, with no individual unit more


than 4.0 mm.

F. Setting Bed Materials:

1. Portland cement mortar shall comply with ES for Portland cement.

2. Clean sand.

3. Water shall be clean, potable, and free from impurities that could
affect Mosaic tile work.

4. Setting bed materials shall consist of 350 Kg. Portland cement to


one cubic meter fine sand, by weight. Tiny percentage of Hydrated
lime may be added and mixed with the minimum amount of water
necessary to produce a workable mass.

G. Grouting Materials:

1. Commercial Portland cement grout shall conform to ES for Portland


cement.

2. Module Size: To be selected by the Owner from manufacturer’s


standard range of sizes.

3. Sand shall be clean and sharp, properly graded for the purpose and
containing not more than 3 percent (by weight) of clay loam silt or
other deleterious matter.

4. Water shall be clean, potable, and free from impurities that could
affect Mosaic tile work.

5. The mix for Mosaic tile grout shall consist of one part Portland
cement to one part fine graded sand

6. The tiles shall be thoroughly grouted with the same cement and
colored composition as specified. The grout shall be of the
consistency of thick cream and shall be brushed over the tile to
eliminate all imprisoned air and the surface shall be thoroughly filled
for final grinding the very smooth surface of finished mosaic tiles
shall show not less than 75% of its area in exposed aggregate
evenly distributed and shall conform, in appearance to the approved
samples.

2.2 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver and store packaged materials in original containers with seals


unbroken and labels intact until time of use. Materials for mortar and grout
shall be furnished in bags displaying the manufacturer’s trademark and
indicating type of material. Materials shall be dry and free of lumps.

B. Prevent damage or contamination to materials by water, freezing, foreign


matter, and other causes. Materials shall be stored in a dry, weather tight,
ventilated structure.

C. Deliver extra tile and trim units. Quantity of full-size units shall be equal to
5 percent of amount installed for each type, composition, color, pattern,
and size. Units shall be packaged with protective covering for storage and
identified with labels clearly describing contents.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.1. PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain environmental conditions and protect work during and after


installation to comply with referenced standards and manufacturer’s printed
recommendations.

1. Vent temporary heaters to exterior to prevent damage to tile work


from carbon dioxide buildup.

2. Maintain temperatures at 10 qC or more in tiled areas during


installation and for 7 days after completion, unless higher
temperatures are required by referenced installation standard or
manufacturer’s instructions.

3.2. EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates and areas where tile will be installed, with installer
present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and
other conditions affecting performance of installed tile.

1. Verify that substrates for setting tile are firm, dry, clean, and free
from oil or waxy films and curing compounds.

2. Verify that installation of grounds, anchors, recessed frames,


electrical and mechanical units of work, and similar items located in
or behind tile has been completed before installing tile.

3. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have


been corrected.

3.3. PREPARATION

A. Blending

1. For tile exhibiting color variations within the ranges selected during
sample submittals, verify that tile has been blended in factory and
packaged accordingly so that tile units taken from one package
show the same range in colors as those taken from other packages
and match approved samples. If not factory blended, either return to
manufacturer or blend tiles at project site before installing.

B. Mixing Mortars and Grout

1. Mix mortars and grouts to comply with requirements of referenced


standards and manufacturers including those for accurate
proportioning of materials, water, or additive content; type of mixing
equipment; selection of mixer speeds; mixing containers; mixing
time; and other procedures needed to produce mortars and grouts of
uniform quality with optimum performance characteristics for
application indicated.

3.4. INSTALLATION

A General

1. Comply with (ES) tile installation standards that apply to type of


setting and grouting materials and methods indicated.

2. Tiles shall be laid out from the centerline of each space outward and
adjustments made along walls, partitions and borders, so as to
establish symmetrical patterns with a minimum of cut tiles. Joints
between tiles shall be of uniform width not exceeding 2.0 mm. Tiles
shall be cut with suitable cutting tool and rough edges shall be
rubbed smooth. Cut tile misfits shall be replaced with properly cut
tiles. Straight edges shall be accurately set to the lines established
and reset at suitable intervals to keep the joints parallel over the
entire area, Tile shall be laid to the straight edges.

3. Tile shall be laid on the freshly prepared setting bed while the
surface is still plastic and the tile then tamped into mortar to ensure
solid bedding to the exact level or slope of finished floor surface.
Joints shall not be greater than 2.0 mm wide when the mortar has
hardened sufficiently, misplaced tiles shall be repositioned and reset
and damaged or defective tiles shall be replaced: A thick creamy
slurry of neat grout Portland cement, or white cement, and a
minimum amount of water shall be brushed over the floor until all
joints are thoroughly filled. The surface of the floor shall be rubbed
gently with a good block to bring tile surface to true planes, excess
slurry shall be removed and the floor shall be rubbed with burlap to
clean the tiles and finish the joints. The completed tile floor shall be
covered with water proof paper with all joint lapped at least 100 mm
and laps tape-sealed or held down with planks or other weights and
allowed to damp sure for at least three days before foot traffic is
permitted

4. Extend tile work into recesses and under or behind equipment and
fixtures (where applicable), to form a complete covering without
interruptions except as otherwise shown. Terminate work neatly at
obstructions, edges, and corners without disrupting pattern or joint
alignments.

5. Accurately form intersections and returns and rub smooth cuts with
fine stone. Perform cutting and drilling of tile without marring visible
surfaces. Carefully grind cut edges of tile abutting trim, finish, or
built-in items for straight aligned joints. Fit tile closely to electrical
outlets, piping, fixtures, and other penetrations so that plates,
collars, or covers overlap tile.

6. Jointing Pattern: Unless otherwise shown, lay tile in grid pattern.


Align joints when adjoining tiles on floor, skirting, walls, and trim are
same size (where applicable). Lay out tile work and center tile fields
in both directions in each space or on each wall area. Adjust to
minimize tile cutting. Provide uniform joint widths unless otherwise
shown.

7. Expansion Joints: Locate expansion joints and other sealant-filled


joints, including control, contraction, and isolation joints, where
indicated during installation of setting materials, mortar beds, and

tile. Do not saw cut joints after installation of tiles. Locate joints in
tile surfaces directly above joints in concrete substrates.

8. Provide control/ expansion joints for tiled areas not exceeding 20 m².
Fill joint with moldable joint sealant, with backer rods, in accordance
with “Joint Sealant” specification 99999-9-3SS-ATJS-00001.

B Workmanship

1. Carefully lay out the work to provide symmetry about center


lines of the areas and avoid small, unsightly cuts.

2. Unless otherwise required, tile heights may finish one-half


course above or below indicated heights to avoid tile cutting.

3. Do not use thin cuts and pieces and chipped, spalled, or


otherwise disfigured tiles.

C Setting Beds

1. Concrete and cement plaster backings for mortar set tile shall be
free from mortar splashing and projecting fins, and shall present a
reasonably uniform surface without deep depressions, cracks, or
open joints.

2. Dampen concrete wall surface with clean water and apply a dash
coat composed of one part of cement to one-and-one-half parts of
sand. Apply dash coat at least 16 hours before the next succeeding
coat.

3. Immediately before applying the mortar setting beds on wall


surfaces, moisten the underlying scratch coats or dash coats of
cement plaster with clean water.

4. Spread the mortar to true, even planes at proper thickness for the
finish, using screed strips.

5. Do not spread more setting mortar than can be covered with tile
before the mortar reaches its initial set. Should more mortar be
spread than can thus be covered, cut back the unfinished portion of
the setting bed to a clean beveled edge and remove.

6. Setting beds over membrane waterproofing shall have wire


reinforcement with edges lapped at least 50 mm.

7. Do not re-temper beds that have partially hardened.

D Tile

1. Thoroughly soak mortar-set tile in clean water for at least 1 hour


before setting, and apply to setting beds while damp, but without
free water on the back of tile.

2. Accurately set tile with neat cement grout, firmly pressed, and beat
into full mortar beds with flush, well fitted joints in true planes,
graded or leveled, and neatly cut and fitted closely against abutting
work.

3. Do not split tile, except where no alternative is possible

4. Joints of paper-mounted stock shall be of uniform width, and shall


leave no indication of jointing between sheets.

5. Set floor tile true to straight edge. Finish tile floors flush with cove
bases, nosing, gratings, strainers, and drains.

E Grout

1. Thoroughly wash out wall and floor tile joints and saturate with clean
water before grouting. After setting bed is dry, grout joints with white
or colored grouting cement mixed with water to a creamy
consistency and thoroughly forced into joints to fill entire depth.
Grout flush with face of tiles, forming a neatly finished smooth
surface. Set paving tile floor and base in toilets and battery rooms
with acid- and alkali-proof cement, used in accordance with the
manufacturer’s directions. Solidly fill joints to full thickness of tile
and finish flush and neat with face of tile.

3.5. FINISHING

A. Rough Grinding

1. Grind with 24 or finer grit stones or with comparable diamond plates.

2. Follow initial grind with 80 or finer grit stones

B. Fine Grinding

1. Grind with 80 or finer grit stones until all grout is removed from
surface.

2. Upon completion, terrazzo shall show a minimum of 70 percent


marble chips.

3.6. CURING, REPAIR, CLEANING, AND PROTECTION

A Keep tiled surfaces moist for a period of 5 days to adequately cure the
cement mortar.

B Wash all surfaces with a neutral cleaner.

C Rinse with clean water and allow surface to dry.

D Protect completed Mosaic tile work from damage resulting from other
construction-related activities. The work shall be ready for final inspection
and acceptance by the Owner or his agent.

E Repair or replace damaged Mosaic tile work to the full satisfaction of the
Owner before acceptance of work.

Appendix A

DEFINITION OF SUPPLIER DOCUMENT REVIEW STATUS ASSIGNED BY PGESCo


The guidelines listed below shall be followed in assigning the document status code to
Supplier/Contractor submittal. These status codes serve as review points for starting or continuing
the process of procurement, manufacture, construction, and/or installation of the commodities
covered by this contract. The submittal and its transmittal letter shall indicate the reason for
withholding permission to proceed with the work. The submittal normal review cycle should
comprise one revision (Revision 01), for PGESCo review and comment, to be resolved by Supplier,
then to be re-submitted by Supplier to PGESCo, as (Revision 02), with all comments resolved to be
given status “1”. Submittals re-submitted to PGESCo, with PGESCo comments ignored,
unresolved, and/or improperly resolved by Supplier, shall be given status “3”, and the
Supplier/Contractor shall be fully liable if the project schedule is consequently impacted. All
Supplier’s/Contractor’s submittals given review status “2” or “3” by PGESCo, must be re-submitted,
with all PGESCo’s comments resolved/incorporated, by Supplier, within 15 calendar days from
receipt date of commented documents, for other cycle of review. Submittals that are re-submitted
to PGESCo for review shall clearly show and indicate all changes/modifications made to them from
previous revision. The Supplier/Contractor shall circle/cloud and/or highlight the changes on the
submittal, associated with revision number in a triangle adjacent to the circle/cloud, or, the
Supplier/Contractor shall provide a separate list of the changes/modifications performed on the
submittal. Final submittal of Supplier/Contractor documents, in soft and hard format, stamped with
“As-Built” stamp, shall be a mandatory, even though, the document was previously given review
status code “1” or “4”, and the site condition of the installed/constructed commodity conforms to the
current document. Permission to proceed does not constitute acceptance or approval of design
details, calculations, analyses, test methods, or materials developed or selected by the
Supplier/Contractor, and does not relieve the Supplier/Contractor from full responsibility of
compliance with contractual obligations.
x STATUS “1”: Work May Proceed:
The submittal conforms to contract documents requirements and contains all required details and
information sufficient for proper construction, installation, erection, etc. The submittal requires no
changes or additions. Matters remaining to be resolved are minor, and do not require submittal
change and may be handled by correspondence. Where it is known that the design information on
a Supplier/Contractor submittal, or part thereof, is not complete and re-submittals shall be required,
e.g., due to "HOLD" areas, the submittal shall be assigned another status code, of those indicated
below, as applicable.
x STATUS “2”: Revise and Re-submit. Work May Proceed Subject to Resolution of Indicated
Comments:
The submittal is in basic conformance with contract document requirements. Minor deviations from
contract document requirements are noted, or other minor technical or physical changes in the
design, drawing, product, material, equipment, etc, are required. Such changes may include those
affecting dimensions, material colors, etc. Administrative type changes, such as inclusion of
product, material, and/or equipment tag numbers, shipping notes, etc, may be combined with
technical changes in this status. Supplier/Contractor shall resolve comments and re-submit the
submittal to PGESCo for second cycle of review. Supplier/Contractor may proceed with
procurement, manufacturing, construction, installation, etc, for works other than commented
commodity, and shall resolve comments and re-submit the revised submittals prior to procurement,
manufacturing, construction, installation, etc, of commodity having PGESCo’s comments.
x STATUS “3”: Rejected- Revise and Re-Submit- Work May Not Proceed.
The submittal Does not conform to the contract documents requirements, And/Or, Is of a design
that is technically unacceptable unless significant changes are implemented, And/Or, Does not
meet project requirements, i.e., does not include full detailed shop drawings, incompliant
product/material/equipment data sheet, nonconforming information, product/material/equipment
lacks required quality, etc, And/Or, Does not conform to project criteria or to proposal documents or
data, And/Or, Does not meet minimum submittal requirements, such as, readability, full and correct
dimensions, proper drawing scale and size as required by contract documents, etc, And/Or, Does
not clearly demonstrate, circle, cloud, etc, areas of changes/deviation from previous revision,
And/Or Does not properly resolve PGESCo’s comments on previous revision, etc.
Supplier/Contractor cannot proceed with design, procurement, manufacturing, construction,
installation, etc, of commodity, until resolving PGESCo comments. This submittal rejection with
status “3” does not relieve Supplier/Contractor of any schedule commitments.
x STATUS “4”: Review Not Required. Work May Proceed:
The document is not subject to Owner review. Typical uses for this status are in the review of
items that are Contractor standard products, small interior parts of major equipment, or Contractor-
standardized data, and/or As-Built drawings when are identical to submittal previously given status
“1”
