EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

In order to overcome limitations in transportation cars by because of capacity

limitations, prone to damage during transit, longer transit times, RDSO has designed
Auto Carrier BCACBM Wagons. The wagons are bi-level design with movable middle
deck to provide higher capacity and flexibility to accommodate cars of various sizes.
The design is optimized for various sizes of cars. A rake consisting of 27 wagons has
capacity to transport up to 318 cars.

The Car Wagons were tested for their oscillation behavior up to the maximum test
speed of 110 kmph in empty and up to the maximum test speed of 105 kmph in loaded
condition on station yard and straights track of the test stretches. The trials on 2° curve
could be conducted only up to a maximum speed of 100 kmph because of permanent
speed restriction. Riding characteristics and other parameters were satisfactory on the
curve track. A few additional trials were also carried out for two partial loaded conditions
first, lower deck was loaded and upper deck were empty and second, upper deck was
loaded and lower deck were empty. The trail runs in both the additional conditions
covered the maximum speed of 105 kmph to know the effect of shift in centre of gravity
because of loading pattern.
The oscillation trials were conducted on down line of Moradabad – Bareilly section
covering two stretches each of 1 km straight track, station yard and curved track. The
trial runs stretched for almost five weeks (30 November to 31 December 2012) and
some of the runs do not cover all the test stretches because of various general speed
restrictions imposed time to time.
The analysis of lateral and vertical acceleration indicates that Riding Index of both the
type of wagons remained with acceptable limit of 4.5 as stipulated in 3rd criteria
committee report.
In addition to measurement of acceleration, spring deflection (to estimate wheel loading
and offloading), bogie rotation and bolster swing were recorded with the help of String
Pot and Optical Displacement Sensor, these parameters were found within the
acceptable limit. The data were recorded with the help of a computer based Data
Acquisition System.
Both the Auto Car Wagons exhibited stability at 110 kmph and 105 kmph in empty and
loaded conditions respectively. Oscillation behaviour of the wagons were within
acceptable norms.

4.5 Instrumentation:

4.5.1 Following parameters, as mentioned in the Test Scheme, were recorded on the trailing
bogie of the type ‘A’ and type ‘B’ wagon.

• Vertical and lateral accelerations near trailing bogie pivot

• Dynamic spring deflection (secondary)
• Bogie rotation
• Bolster Swing.

4.5.2 The following transducers were used to record the various parameters.

Parameter Location Transducer

Vertical & Lateral On the floor level near the Accelerometer
acceleration trailing bogie pivot ( Range ±4g)
Secondary spring Between the bogie side frame String Pot (Range
deflection and the bolster ±300mm)
Bogie Rotation & Between the Bogie and the Optical Displacement
Bolster Swing Body Sensor
(Range ± 200mm)

4.6 Test speed:

As per the test scheme, the oscillation trial of BCACBM wagon in Empty & Loaded
condition was subjected to run upto a maximum speed of 110 kmph & 105 Kmph
respectively. The initial speed was 60 Kmph and increases in step of 5/10 kmph on
Curve, Station yard and Tangent track.

The equilibrium super elevation or cant necessary for any speed is calculated from the
equation C = G*V2 /127R, where, C is cant or super elevation in mm, G is gauge and for
broad gauge,

G = 1676 + 67.5 (width of rail head) = 1743.5 mm.(say 1750mm)

As per IRPWM, Para 405, The maximum permissible
Safe speed on curve=0.27 {R(Ca + Cd)}1/2
Where, Ca = actual cant provided in the curve (in mm).
Cd = Cant Deficiency.

As per Para 406(2) of the IRPWM, Max value of Cd for mainline track = 75mm
Max value of Cd for C&M-I, Vol-I standard track = 100mm
R = Radius of curve in metre = 1750/degree of curve
For example, for a curve of 2º, the radius is =1750/2 = 875m

The maximum permissible speed on curve is calculated accordingly. The maximum trial
speed on the curve depends on the calculated speed and the speed restriction on the
curve, whichever is lower.

Testing Directorate
DOP/CG (REV. 09) Page 8 of 48 REPORT NO. RDSO / 2013 / TG / MT – 1231

Calculation:
Safe speed on curve=0.27 {R(Ca + Cd)}1/2
= 0.27 {875(75 + 100)}1/2
= 105 Kmph.

However, The trial on 2° curve up could be conducted only upto a maximum speed of 100
kmph because of permanent speed restriction.

5.0 CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT

The assessment of the Riding & Stability characteristics of the wagon was based on
criteria given on the Third Report of the Standing Criteria Committee. The criteria
pertaining to Wagon are reproduced below:

i) The Lateral / Transverse forces lasting more than 2 meters shall not exceed 0.85 (1
+P/3) tonnes, where P is the axle load in tonnes.
ii) Isolated peak values exceeding the above limit are permissible, provided the record
shows a stabilizing characteristic of the wagon subsequent to the disturbances.
iii) A simultaneous assessment of the Lateral force exerted by the adjacent axles at a
point where a high Lateral force is exerted by a particular axle.
iv) A derailment coefficient should be worked out in the form of ratio between the lateral
force (Hy) and the wheel load (Q) continuously over a period of 1/20th second, the
value Hy/Q shall not exceed 1.
v) A general indication of stable running characteristics of the wagon as evidenced by
the movement of the bogie on straight and curved track, and by the acceleration
readings and instantaneous wheel load variations/spring deflections.
vi) In the case of such wagons where measurement of forces is not possible, evaluation
shall be in terms of ride index which shall not be greater than 4.5; a limit of 4.25 is
preferred.

Lateral force on Rail by the Wagon was not measured in absence of measuring wheels
and other suitable arrangements.

6-0 Discussion of Test Results:

In all the four series of BCACBM A & B auto car wagon exhibited satisfactory results in
riding and stability parameters at a speed of 110 kmph in empty and 105 Kmph for all
the loaded series.

Hence the discussion of test results has been accordingly done up to the test speed of
110 /105 Kmph in all the four series in subsequent paragraphs.

Wedge Test :

Wedge test was conducted to calculate the Natural Frequency of suspension in

Bouncing, Pitching and Rolling modes. The Test wagon in Empty and Loaded conditions
as described before, was allowed to climb over 20 mm high wedge with the help of a
Locomotive. The wheel was dropped from the wedge and allowed to oscillate freely till it
came to halt. The oscillations were recorded. Natural frequencies in various modes and
calculated damping factor are given below:

Taking the actual values of X1 and X2 from the wedge, test acceleration traces, the
damping factor can be calculated.

CONCLUSION:

On the basis of the above, it is concluded that the test BCACBM type A and B wagon
has exhibited satisfactory riding characteristics during trial up to the maximum test speed
of 110 Kmph in empty and up to the maximum test speed of 105 Kmph in different
loading conditions on station yard and straights track of the test stretches. The trials on
2° curve could be conducted only up to a maximum speed of 100 kmph because of
permanent speed restriction and there riding characteristics and other parameters were
satisfactory.

The assessment of the riding characteristics of both the wagons is based on the criterion
given in the 3rd Report of the Standing Criteria Committee.

Calculation of Dyanamic Augumentation

(Off-Loading and On-Loading)

Calculation of Off-Loading and OnL oading of wheel has been done using spring deflection in
the secondary suspension. The spring deflection was measured with the help of string pots.
Value of loading has been calculated by multiplying the deflection with spring stiffness.
The bogie has nested springs having following values.

Helical Springs of BCACBM Wagon (A & B)

Outer Inner Snubber
(i) Free height (mm) 260 243 288
(ii) Solid height (mm) 178.29 182.32 176.84
(iii) Stiffness (Kg/mm) 20.763 36.561 16.701
(iv) No, of springs per nest 7 6 2
(v) No. of springs per bogie 14 12 4

On the the basis of above particular, following algorithm was adopted for calculating load on the
bogie for a given de in dynamic connection.

‘Def – Deflection from the free height of the tallest spring

If Def <= 0 Then
BogieLoading = 0
Else if Def < 28 Then ‘(288 - 260 = 28)
BogieLoading = 16.701 * 4 * Def
Else If Def < 45 Then ‘(288 - 243 = 45)
BogieLoading = 16.701 * 4 * Def + 20.763 * 14 * (Def - 28)
Else If Def < 105.68 Then ‘(288 – 182.32 = 105.68, where 182.32 is the
‘heighest tallest height)
BogieLoading = 16.701 * 4 * Def + 20.763 * 14 * (Def - 28) + 36.561 * 12 * (Def -
45)
Else
BogieLoading = 9999999
End If
BogieLoading = BogieLoading / 1000 ‘Converting from kg to ton

Following is the stiffness characteristic of secondary suspension

‘Off-Loading’ and ‘On-Loading’ in dynamic condition has been calculated in terms of

percentage variation in loading with respect to static load.

Assuming;

m = Spring deflection at static load.

n= Maximum Spring deflection in dynamic condition with respect to position of bolster in the
static load condition.

Percentage variation in loading is calculated as

% Off-Loading = Bogie Loading at deflection (m-n) obtained from the spring characteristics/
Load on bogie in static condition.

% On-Loading = Bogie Loading at deflection (m+n) obtained from the spring characteristics/
Load on bogie in static condition.
