Assignment III

Q1
Given supply voltage Vs= 400 V,
Frequency of supply (f)=50 Hz,
Three-phase load having ZL= (4.0+j2.0) pu
Base impedance of 5Ω per phase
The load resistance is RL =4 × 5.0Ω= 20 Ω.
The load reactance is XL= 5 × 2Ω= 10 Ω.
The load admittance is YL= 1/Z==GL- jBL= (0.04 - j0.02) mhos.
The supply current after compensation is Is= sqrt(3)Vs GL= 29.863 A. (27.71)
Because of balanced and symmetrical operation, Isa=Isb =Isc= Is=27.71 A.
For unity power factor operation, shunt capacitors are connected in parallel to all load branches.
So, BL= -BC= 0.02.
The compensator phase current is IC =VsBC =8 A.
Q2. The value of the capacitor for power factor correction is C= BC/ω =63.16 μF.
Where ω= 2πf
Q3.. The equivalent resistance of the compensated load is Req =1/GL= 25Ω.
Q4. Given supply voltage Vs= 230 V,
Frequency of the supply (f) =50 Hz,
Single-phase load
Having ZL= (16+ j12) Ω.
The source impedance is Zs =Rs +jXs =(1+ j4) Ω.
The load impedance is ZL =(16 +j12) Ω=20 36:86° Ω.
Total impedance is ZT= Zs+ ZL= (17+ j16) Ω=23.345 43:26° Ω.
The load current before compensation is Isold =Vs/|ZT|= 230/23.345 A= 9.856 A.
The voltage drop across the source impedance is VZs=IsoldZs= 40.637 V.
The voltage across the load is VZL=IsoldZL=197.1 V.
The load admittance is YL=GL+ jBL= 1/ZL=(0.04 -j0.03) mhos.
The load power factor can be made unity by connecting a susceptance of BPF =-BL=0.03 mhos.
Let the susceptance of value BT mhos is connected in parallel to the load to raise the load voltage
to the input voltage (VL= Vs).
BT has two components, one for power factor correction and other for raising the load voltage to
the input voltage. Hence, BT=BPF+ BCV.

Substituting the values of Xs=4Ω, Rs= 1Ω, and GL= 0.04 mhos
The value of BCV is 0.013 804 976 mhos.
Total susceptance for voltage regulation is BT=BCV +BPF= 0.043 804 976 mhos.
The total value of the capacitor for voltage regulation is CT=BT/ω =139.51 μF.
Q5. The voltage drop across the source impedance after compensation is VZs= IsnewZs=VL(GL+
jBCV)
Zs= 230 × (0.04+ j0.013 804 976) × (1+ j4) =(9.2+ j3.175) × 4.123=(37.9316 +j13.09)=40.12 V.

Q6. Given supply line voltage Vs=400 V,

Frequency of the supply (f)=50 Hz,
Single-phase 50 kVA, 0.7 lagging power factor load
After compensation, this load is realized as a balanced three-phase unity power factor load;
Therefore, the supply line currents are Isa = 50 000 × 0.7/(sqrt(3)× 400) =50.5181A, Isb
=50.5181A, and Isc = 50.5181 A.
For such a load compensation, the real admittance GLab= 50 000 × 0.8/sqr(400)
= 0.21 mhos
Has to be complemented with a reactive admittance network across other two lines to obtain a
resultant balanced load on the AC supply. It may be simply derived that the load on the AC
supply becomes balanced (and remains real) if a capacitive susceptance BCbc =GLab/sqrt(3) is
connected between phases b and c,
An inductive susceptance BCca= -GLab/sqrt(3) is connected between phases c and a.
Therefore, the compensator currents are ICab .=QLab/V = 50 000 *0.7141/400.=86.03 A
Q7.Therefore, BCbc =GLab/sqrt3=0.121 mhos, CCbc =BCbc/ω =427 μF, and BCca =-GLab/sqrt3
, LCca= 1/BCca =26 mH.
Moreover, for power factor correction at line ab,
QLab=QCab = 50 000 × 0.7141
Thus, CCab =QCab/Vs2=710 μF:
Q8. Given supply phase voltage Vsp= 415/p3V=239.6 V,
Frequency of the supply (f) =50 Hz, and
a single-phase load having ZLa= (6.0+j3.0) pu connected between phase a and neutral terminal
with a base impedance of 4.15Ω per phase.
The load impedance per phase is ZLa=27.839 26.57° Ω= (24.9+j12.45) Ω.
The load admittance per phase is YLa =0.035 920 77 26.57°= 0.032 128 513–j0.016 067 725
mhos.
It requires two set of susceptance, one star connected and other delta connected, across the lines
for Neutral current elimination and load balancing.
Compensator delta connected susceptance are BCabD =2(GLa –GLb)/3√ ;
Substituting the values, BCabD . 0:012 366 27 mhos
The values of delta connected compensator elements are CCabD =BCabD/ω =39.38 μF
Q9, Compensator star connected susceptance for neutral current and power factor correction is
BCcY =-BLc +(GLa _ GLb)./sqrt(3)
Substituting the values, BCcY . 0.018 549 405 mhos:
The values of star connected compensator elements are CCcY = BCcY/ω.=59:075 μF:
