Design procedure for channel/I section purlins
T unacade my

Design Procedure

1. The span of the purlin is taken as c/c distance of the adjacent trusses.

2. The gravity loads P and wind loads H are computed. The component of
these loads in the direction parallel & perpendicular to the sheeting are
determined. These loads are multiplied with partial safety factor for loads
as per table 4 of IS 800:2007 for various load combinations.

3. The maximum B.M. (Mu or M2 , and Mv or M y) and S.F. (Fu or F2 ,

and Fv or Fy) using the
factored loads are determined.
Design Procedure

4. The required value of plastic section modulus of the section may

be determined by using the following equation:

• Z = MzYmo+ (MyYmo X 2.5X .!!:..)

p , req f y f y bf

• M2 is the factored bending moment about u-u axis

• My is the factored bending moment about v-v axis
• fy is the yield stress of steel
• Vmo is the partial safety factor = 1.10
• d = depth of the trial section
• bt = width of flange of the trial section

• Since this equation uses both width and depth of a section,

we must use a trial section and check for its adequacy.
Design Procedure

5. Assume certain trail section based on the Zp, r eq· Check for the section
classification as per table 2 of IS 800:2007. (Plastic analysis)

6. Check for shear capacity of the section for both u and v axes taken
as (from Moris and Plum 1996):

• Vdz- - fy A
,,,/3 Ymo vz
- fy
• Vdy- ,,,/3 Avy
3Ymo

Design Procedure
7. Compute and check for the safety of the design bending capacity of
the section in both the axes using:

• Zpzfy< lZ
M = Zezfy
dz - · Ymo
Ymo

• M = Zpyfy ::S;l. Z Zeyfy

d

8. Check for local capacity using the interaction formula

• Mz+ My ::S; 1 .0
Mdz Mdy

9. Check whether the deflection is under permissible limits (1/ 1 80) as

per table 6 of IS 800:2007.
