AUTHOR GUIDELINES
ICNF 2020 Essay Competition: Nutrition and Food Innovation for Better Life is an
international competition where youth have an opportunity to share their idea/concept,
concerns, or their research findings related to nutrition and food, and seek actionable solutions
for better life.
Judges for this competition include are well-respected academia from the fields of
nutrition and food science. Pre-selection of essays will be done prior to the ICNF 2020. Five (5)
finalists will be invited to attend ICNF 2020 with waived registration fee. During the closing
ceremony of ICNF 2020, winners will be announced and awarded.
I. Introduction
A. Creative opening to catch the reader’s attention. Participants can use interesting
facts, quotes, etc.
B. Background information
C. Preview the main point of essay
D. Thesis statement affirm the main idea of the essay
II. Body
A. Sub Topic 1
1. Topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph and the transitions
from the paragraph before it.
2. Supporting details strengthen or defend the topic sentence. Participants
should use at least two (2) supporting details in each paragraph. These
supporting details can include facts, examples, and expert opinions about a
specific subject. If primary or secondary sources are used, participants must
use the APA style for in-text citations.
B. Sub Topic 2
1. Topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph and the transitions
from the paragraph before it.
2. Supporting details strengthen or defend the topic sentence. Participants
should use at least two (2) supporting details in each paragraph.
C. Sub Topic 3
1. Topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph and the transitions
from the paragraph before it.
2. Supporting details strengthen or defend the topic sentence. Participants
should use at least two (2) supporting details in each paragraph.
(Note: more sub topics can be created using similar format)
III. Conclusion
A. Restate the thesis statement. Participants should rephrase the thesis statement.
B. Summarize the main point.
C. Tie to opening. Participants should relate their conclusion to the
opening/introduction of the essay.
IV. References (APA style)
