TV MasterChef
People sometimes say that we cook much less at home these days. We often go out to restaurants or buy
takeaways, but the strange thing is that we watch far more TV about cooking. MasterChef is one of the most
popular TV programmes in the world. It is a cooking competition and it was first on TV in Britain in 1990. You
can see it now in forty different countries all over the world, including Brazil, India and Russia. It is especially
popular in Australia.

In each programme, cooks have to do different tasks and at the end of most of the shows, the judges tell
someone to leave. After about twenty programmes, the most successful cook wins the title of MasterChef.

There are four different forms of the show. There is the ‘ordinary’ MasterChef. Then there is MasterChef
Professional for people who already work in restaurants. There is Celebrity MasterChef which is for famous
people who also love cooking. There is also Junior MasterChef for cooks up to the age of sixteen.

Why is the show so popular? Perhaps it is because people travel more these days. They enjoy eating foreign
food and they want to learn how to cook it. Also, we can also buy all sorts of international ingredients in our
shops. It is good that people enjoy watching programmes like MasterChef. Eating well is good for our health.
So if the programme makes people think more carefully about what they eat, that will be a good thing.
