Task 1: Do you think it is appropriate for authors to fictionalize events such as the Holocaust?

Product: Write a response in the form of a five-paragraph essay. You should have at least three reasons which
support your opinion. You need an introduction (with a thesis statement), three body paragraphs (topic
sentence for each) and a conclusion. Although you do not need particular page numbers (textual evidence) for
this essay, ensure to provide examples from the novel which support your opinion. Remember this is not a
summary of the novel, so use examples appropriately.

Essay Formula:

1) Hook – write a question (introduction). First sentence of the introduction.

2) 3-4 lined summary of novel (introduction). Start by writing, ‘The novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by
John Boyne is about ... (underline the book title throughout the essay).
3) Thesis statement: (Introduction – last sentence).
From examining ‘point one’, ‘point two’, and ‘point three’, it is clear that ‘opinion’
Your opinion comes from the topic/question (Do you think it is appropriate for authors to fictionalize
events such as the Holocaust”
4) Each thesis statement point gets its own paragraph within the essay (three paragraphs)
5) Each body paragraph gets a topic sentence (Ex: It is/ is not acceptable to fictionalize events such as the
Holocaust because ...).
6) Conclusion – summarize the points listed above.
