Media Literacy (Part 1)

Recitation
1. What is media literacy?
Provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages in a
variety of forms - from print to video to the Internet.
2. Why do we need to read media from a critical point of view?
We need to read media with our critical thinking because there is so many
information that everyone misunderstands which is very dangerous because what this
people understand, they share it to everybody and to social medias which this information
considered fake because of absence of critical thinking ability. Critical thinking is very
important to read in a critical point of view.
3. Why is media literacy very important to democracy?
Media literacy is very important to democracy because different forms of media is
a way that citizens can appreciate how the system of democracy works and to know what
are the issues and concern of everybody.
Identify the fallacy in the following statements. Explain your answer.
1. Don’t waste food, people in Africa are dying because of hunger.
Appeal to emotion because there is an emotional response in place of a valid or
compelling argument.
2. How can you argue your case against Martial Law when you were not yet born during
that time?
Ad hominem because its overtly attacking somebody, or more subtly casting doubt on
their character or personal attributes as a way to discredit their argument.
3. If we allow family planning, what’s next? Allowing abortion?
Slippery slope because if we allow A to happen which is family planning, then Z which
is abortion will happen too, therefore A must not happen.
4. Kopiko is the best coffee because everyone is drinking it.
Bandwagon because when everyone believes it, so you should too.
5. You need to show evidence that you did not cheat in the last election.
Loaded Question because it is a question that has a presupposition built in, which
implies something but protects the one asking the question from accusations of false
claims.
6. If you are pro-mining, then you are supporting the destruction of the environment.
Strawman because the argument was exaggerating, misrepresenting, or just completely
fabricating someone's argument.
Applying critical thinking
1. What message or argument is presented in this poster?
This poster shows us a battle between the Commission on Human Rights and to
the government especially to the Duterte administration which this agency does not
support the program of the administration which is the “War on Drugs” that thousands of
alleged drug lords, drug pushers and users were killed. CHR were opposing this rally that
there is something wrong, no one deserve to be killed and there is still time to change,
they said. Because of this, I remember that congress agreed that CHR were given only
P1000 as a budget for 2018.
2. Do you agree with the message or argument? Why or why not?
I agree because change is in progress now. Drug users were surrendered to the police and
also, I’m supporting the Duterte administration.
Why is critical thinking very important to media literacy?
Media literacy is a tool or framework to have an access of what happening in our society,
we gather information at the same time we share information but are we sure that what we are
sharing is true or partly true so we must need to be a critical thinkers because people who were
critical thinkers can evaluate, analyze and conceptualize if this information is true or it is
considered a fake news.
Why is it important for students to develop their critical thinking skills?
As a student, we must need to develop our critical thinking skills at this very early age
because this can help us in our studies and also because of our state of mind, we quickly believe
in everything that we were focusing only on our interests and not the outcome.

Class Discussion
1. What valuable lessons can we learn from the video?
There are so many lessons that we can learn from the video one is, we must
need to be a critical thinker because there are so many misleading tactics that this
can catch our attention because they show their products at its best from
advertisements but that’s not how actually looks like from the consumer. It is like
an expectation vs reality because you were expecting a good one but in reality, it’s
not.
2. How is being a media and information literate related to being a wise consumer?
Being a media and information literate is being a wise consumer because
these kinds of misleading tactics cannot deceive you. They catch you from their
advertisements but as a wise consumer, you can see if this is true or not. Being a
wise consumer is very important because your decision is well decided.
3. How can media and information literacy make producers or companies be more honest in
their advertisements?
They must advertise their products in very unique like they don’t need to
edit to look like very delicious and catchy. Also, they don’t need to exaggerate like a
bracelet can keep you healthy because wise consumer can see all of these tactics.

Propaganda War: Weaponizing the Internet (Part 3)
Recitation
1. What does weaponizing the internet means?
Weaponizing the internet means everyone used the internet to spread data’s and
information that are very important. They use the internet to create polls and surveys in
the political field and because of this, many were also violating the rules that they create
fake accounts and spread fake information’s with the use of bots and human. They use
the internet for their own good and not for its purpose.
2. What do you think are the real dangers of propaganda? Why?
Nowadays, everyone is now being influenced by the media like television, radio,
newspapers, and the internet affect the way we think on different issues. Whatever we
read and hear from different medias, we think this is true but this information is full of
distorted and oversimplify evidences which made by propagandist.
Performance Task: Reaction Paper
Internet: Universal Tool
Internet is very wide and its no bound scope is infecting everyone in societies. Everyone
uses internet to weaponize for their own good, they send data and information’s in a single click.
It is a very clear article from Ms. Ressa that weaponizing the internet is all over the
internet now. During the first social media elections where President Rodrigo Duterte decided to
run in a presidency, there so many tweets that were mentioning that he will run in presidency by
the use of different bots which this reaches 30,000 tweets, at times reaching 700 tweets per
minute. This shows that everything is possible. Another is an online survey for who is in favor to
all aspiring president candidates simulated by Rappler. From this survey, Rappler saw a technical
manipulation and later they investigate and found out that that 99% of votes from Russia, Korea
and China were for Mar Roxas but after deleting the fake votes changed the winner from Roxas
to Duterte.
Weaponizing the internet is very dangerous because it affects everyone. What we can do
is to become a critical thinker to avoid this problem which is very critical. We must know how to
deal with these to avoid conflicts. We must need to be more alert in any information that we
hear. There are lots of negative effects brought by Propaganda and the article “Propaganda War:
Weaponizing the Internet” by Maria A. Ressa is just one of the proofs that support this.
