Summary and Purpose of Assessment
This project will introduce you to the aspects of load calculations required for the
structural design process of a building.
Estimation of the dead load and imposed load of the given plan
Estimation of the wind load of the building you are residing
Estimation of the strength of the welded and bolt joint
As part of a project team you have been engaged to find the design load for a single
storey hospital building. Your design team will be in groups of 5.

Project details
As part of a project team you have been engaged to find the design load of a single
storey hospital building. The specifications of the building are as follows:
1) Refer to the reinforced concrete floor framing layout of a hospital shown in
Figure 1, 2 and 3:
a. Assume the length of the beam and span of the slab.
b. Assume size of the slab from 100 mm to 200 mm.
c. Assume size of the beam width from 200 mm to 300 mm and depth
from 300 mm to 500 mm including the slab thickness.
d. Assume the size of square column equal to the width of beam width
and height of column from 3 m to 5 m.
e. Take reinforcement for slab, beam and column 1% , 1.5 % and 3%
steel respectively .
f. Draw the load distribution path from slab to beam
g. Calculate the design permanent load on column C1 and C2.
h. Calculate the design-imposed load on column C1 and C2.
i. Calculate the design limit state load (strength) on column C1 and C2.
2) Estimate the design wind speed for the 4-orthogonal direction for your house
you are living in using AS1170.2
3) Identify any bolt and weld connection and find the efficiency of the bolt
connection and the strength of the weld joint using AS 4100.
