will that be? …………………………………….
(c) How many rings will there be in each row if the rings are arranged into 9 equal
rows?

Activity 2:
The following example will be done as a group activity in class with the learners:
How many chickens at R57 each can be bought with R500?
In this activity, the most important thing is to find the key words
- Total amount = R500
- Price per chicken = R57
- Question- How many chickens
The other important thing in this activity is to translate the question into mathematical
sentence, which can be done once the key words are identified.
Number sentences: 500 ÷ 57 = ____
We now apply any division method to find the answer
Using the clue board we have: 57 x 10 = 570(too much)
57 x 5 = 285
57 x 4 = 228
57 x 3 = 171
57 x 2 = 114
57 x 1 = 57
Example 2
If Sakhile saved R984 over 2 years, how much did he save on average every month?
Key words: total saved = R984
Number of months = 24
Question: how much per month?
Translation to mathematics: 984 ÷ 24 = ________
Calculation using clue board: 10 x 24 = 240
20 x 24 = 480 (double)
40 x 24 = 960 (double 20)
5 x 24 = 120 (halve of 10)
4 x 24 = 96
3 x 24 = 72
2 x 24 = 48
1 x 24 = 24
Multiply Subtract
1 x 24 = 24 24 – 24 =
0 (remainder)
Hence :984 ÷ 24 = (40 + 1)
= 41
Sakhile saved R41 every month.
3. Calculate.
(a) 625 ÷ 28 (b) 625 ÷ 78
(b) How many truckloads must be delivered if 500 bags of cement are needed on a
construction site?
(c) 851 trees are planted in 23 equal rows. How many trees are there in each row?
3. All the learners of a primary school are going on a school outing. They are travelling
on five buses.
There are 76 learners on Bus A.
There are 68 learners each on Buses B and C.
There are 59 learners on Bus D.
There are 74 learners on Bus E..
When they travel back to school, the buses will all carry an equal number of learners.
How many learners will there be on each bus?
(b) How many blue beads will Thandi need for the mats she can make with 750 pink
beads?
(b) How many green beads will Thandi need for the mats she can make with 800
brown beads?
(c) How many pink beads will Thandi need for the mats she can make with 800
brown beads?
