Decorative Masks have been used to make statements and to celebrate events. Artists have
created elaborate masks to define who they are and to tell stories about others.
For this project, you are going to be creating an artistic mask primarily with cardboard and oil
pastels.
Watch the following video to see how you will start to create your own mask
out of cardboard.

Sketch - Now it is your turn. Draw 2-3 ideas of what you will make your mask look like
before constructing your mask.
Keep it abstracted or simplified .
Think of an emotion you will try to capture in the mask-
Keep it 3D ... be sure to stack shapes, layer materials, add some corrugated pieces for
contrast, or thinner forms of cardboard.
Add in at least one extra material beyond cardboard and oil pastels… yarn? Plastic? fabric ???
- Find cardboard from a variety of boxes like Amazon orders, and some thinner types like
cereal boxes, pasta boxes,etc.
- If you are having trouble locating cardboard, let me know ASAP. I can leave some for
you in the main office and you can come pick some up from the school.
Share your ideas for your mask with me ahead of starting the actual mask.
After I see and comment on your mask, use the feedback and begin creating your mask with
your cardboard.
Adding color may be easiest before actually glueing shapes into place. So cut, then color, and
rearrange shapes several times before actually glueing them all down.
Be sure to try mixing some colors and blending or layering colors together.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or need any additional support.
Attach photos of your mask sketches. Label each with an emotion you are trying
to portray. You will sketch two designs and attach them.
Add colored pencil on to your sketch, and label them with the extra material you found to
add on.
Be sure to “turn in” the above 10 questions and your sketches for points.
