Capstone Draft Proposal Worksheet

Name: Nicole Litcanu

Website: nicolelitcanu05.weebly.com
Topic: Art-panel oil painting
Strand: project
Inquiry Question: How does change affect one’s mindset compared to how it affects one’s
inner desire and how are you able to depict this concept visually though
multiple connecting panels?

1. Capstone Project Summary: In the box below, please type out a 200 – 300 words explanation of what
you are planning to do with your capstone project. It should be as specific as possible, detailing what
you hope to accomplish.
For my capstone project, I will be creating a panel painting using oil as the base medium. My goal is to
work with the new texture of oils to gain knowledge in my art style while also building skill with the
medium. The material I will be using for the panels is canvas, as the texture provides depth in the pieces.
The colours will be in the overall spectrum of neutral tones, as I plan to create depth through small hints
of colour in the lighting of my panels. The overall theme is “how change affects one’s mindset compared
to how it affects one’s inner desire.” Emily Carr values depth, explanation, and the overall process of doing
the piece much more than the skill it takes to create such a piece. This semester, I will be using my idea
making skills to create a meaningful piece that is able to be interpreted by viewers with powerful intent.
The theme and pictures should flow without leaving unanswered questions (unless done so on purpose by
the artist.) I will be following the Emily Carr portfolio guideline booklet along with adapting to my mentor,
Mrs. Kang’s professional input. By the end of this semester, I should be able to answer the questions
below:

How does texture affect the feeling of the piece?

Why is it important to think through your intent with your art before making it?

How do images show individuality in your work and process?

Are there set rules to art?

2. Core Competencies:
In the boxes below, explain how your project will demonstrate your abilities and skills from each section of the
Core Competencies. (You must choose at least two points from each skill area of the core competencies.)

Core Competency: How you demonstrate it in your Capstone Project:

Personal Awareness & Self-regulation: I have been setting goals per day of working on my
Responsibility capstone, I.e., getting blocking finished on a certain day.
Self-determination: I am self-motivated to the point of me already
experimenting with textures of the medium I am planning to use for my
capstone.
Social Responsibility Contributing to the community and caring for the environment: I strive
for my work to be perceived and understood. My goal is to have my work
create a feeling that is both unique and relatable.
Valuing Diversity: Everyone’s creations are unique, and I am one to
admire people’s work. I have communicated with people in our class
about their capstones and have even given them feedback when they
have asked for it.
Critical Thinking Analyze and critique: Even in my practice piece, I have constantly been
changing colours and textures, altering blocking and adding details.
Develop and design: I am showing my progress with learning a new
medium while keeping my unique style and strong technique.
Creative Thinking Novelty and value: I have sketched out and planned three different panel
paintings for my final piece. They all are built around the theme of “how
growth and age affect our society” and are my original ideas.
Generating ideas: I have thoroughly thought about how to make this
painting my own original piece with the thought of meaning and
perspective in mind.
Communication Acquire, interpret, and present information: I have been working on and
revising my artist’s statement for my new piece. I have annotated and
edited the wording four times.
Explain/recount and reflect on experiences and accomplishments: I have
been applying my experiences with oil texture to my piece, while also
noting what I need to pay attention to.
Personal & Cultural Identity Personal values and choices: I value painting over any career path. I fear
that I will not get the results I dream of by pursuing education in arts,
though I still work on creating every day. I do not let my nervousness
affect my quality of work nor my motivation to do it.
Personal Strengths and Abilities: I have been using my knowledge in
painting with acrylics to better my technique at using oils. Though the
texture and processes are different, there are parts of my technique
from acrylics I have painted prior to oils that show my skill in art.

3) Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question.

Explain WHY you are choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?
My first choice for PSI’s is Emily Carr, University of Art, and Design. In their portfolio requirements, they
state that they are looking for 10-20 finished original pieces of your work. They must be finished no earlier
than 2-3 years from when you apply. As one can interpret, that is an abundance of work. Not only is this an
important learning process for me, but also a chance to lessen my workload.

4 ) Background: What background knowledge / connections / prior learning do you have that can help
you to be successful with your project?
I have been working with acrylic paint seriously for 3 years. I am self-taught, and honestly view it as a
benefit of my individuality in my pieces. My attention to detail and willfulness to learn is what will help
me do be successful in this project. I have Mrs. Kang as my mentor, and she is guiding me through the
process of applying to Emily Carr along with my capstone project. I appreciate her professional support
and input. Mrs. Kang is a graduate from the school I want to go to.
5) Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does
this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals? What are you hoping to gain from
completing this project (other than graduating or passing CLC 12)?
My intended career area is currently communication design arts. I have been told that I am gifted in art,
though I do not want to throw possible career paths down the drain for something I am skilled at. For
me, art-oriented education is a test of skill. I fear that I will lack financial stability. Luckily, creativity is a
well-rounded skill. With this project, I hope to gain skill in a new medium while also having the benefit
of enlarging my portfolio.

6) Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present your
project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You may use a
combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Power Point, Canva or Prezi
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o I-movie presentation
o YouTube channel
o Other
I am planning to make an electronic portfolio. In it will be slides of my progress, problems, and resolves. I will
also be taking time lapse videos of me painting different steps in my project. I will write detailed explanations
on why the different steps in my process matter and what applying them does to the painting. I will also
explain my choice of colour and contrast, and how they enrich the quality of my painting. I will show different
brush strokes and techniques and demonstrate how they create value to my piece.
