Crit 1: Proposal

Name of student: Ellie Rodgers Name of reviewer: Francesca Forsyth

Is the project proposal written on the correct UAL Template? Yes

Is it written within the allocated word limit? Is spelling, grammar & punctuation being used
effectively? Yes

Section 1:

Does the paragraph explain the reasons for the theme choice clearly? What evidence is provided?
Yes, you have stated the subject of your project clearly, human figure, and pointed out that your life
drawing and shape based mono print work for the last project has informed this decision.

Does the paragraph discuss prior learning/experience gained on the course or previously? Give
evidence. Yes, you have concluded “textiles and photography are [my] strongest areas” and that you
have spent the time to understand the skills associated with these practices like stitching, knitting and
styling photoshoots. This knowledge from the past two units has increased your confidence to create
an effective and concrete FMP using a combo of textiles and photo to “allow [me] to manipulate work
(digitally and physically)” to explore the themes of emotion and destruction of the self.

Section 2:

Which pathway is the student mainly focused on? (e.g Textiles, 3D, Fine art, Graphic Design)
Combination of Textiles and Photography.

Are the students’ aims and intentions clear? What is their work about? Yes, you have stated clearly
that your project will explore “emotion and expression” which comes from an interest of “the way the
mind works and the human figure”. You have linked this to a broader theme of mental health and
within that anxiety and aim to create pieces “that have a range of emotions clashing or contrasting to
represent the chaos of life”.

Are there examples of artists / designers / makers that the student is looking at in their research?
You have included the photographer Alexey Titarenko and how their use of low shutter speed to
capture movement out on streets has inspired you to explore this with studio portraits.

Are there examples of the type of media / techniques / processes that the student wants to
investigate? Yes, both digital and physical media will be used to create outcomes, such as photoshop
to explore distortion and editing styles, destroying physical copies of your images with stitch and paint
and in camera techniques, like low shutter speed. Your aim is to be expressive in your explorations
with a variety of techniques to “reinforce the idea of chaos within human emotions and everyday life”.

What else could be added to this to make things clearer? Not really to make it clearer as it is very
clear and concise already, but maybe include the name of a designer who has inspired the idea for your
FMP.

Section 3:

Is there are plan for review & evaluation within the project? Yes

What types of evaluative activities have been decided? (daily diary, weekly review, peer
assessment, group crit, 1:1 tutorials) You plan to write to-do lists at the end of each week to step
back and action plan for the forthcoming week, as well as engaging in critical advice from tutors and
peer feedback.

Additional sections:

Is there a bibliography? Does it use Harvard referencing correctly? No

Is there an action plan in place? No

How could this proposal be extended / improved / refined? Sections 1-3 are excellently worded and
require zero to no refinement, they are concise and give your project a clear direction, very good job!
The additional sections just need adding your bibliography, but the action plan, I would say, is not
required as you have stated in Section 3 your own way about planning for the weeks ahead and how
you will document this on your blog accordingly.
