1 Introduction
The CE and UL declaration of conformity for the product will be fulfilled if the setup and
! cabling is undertaken in accordance with the specification in the manual and the docu-
mentation listed there, such as mounting instructions, cable lists etc.Where necessary,
project-specific documentation should be taken into account.
Deviations from the specifications or independent changes during setup, such as use of
cable types with lower screening values, for example, can lead to the CE requirements
being violatad. In such cases the CE declaration of conformity is invalidated and the
responsibility passes to the person who has caused the deviations.

Note for BS41U:

! Before starting installation of Data Circuits and External Interconnection Cables pay
attention to the NEC, section 725-54 c).
Transient voltage surge surpression and primary protectors are not required at the entry
of the wiring to the BS41U if the exposed wiring is limited to less or equal 140 feet.
Refer to NEC Article 725 c) and 800-30 for proper clearence of data wiring from power
and lightning conductors.
The corresponding Canadian Electric Codes (CEC) sections to NEC 800-30 are
CEC 600-20 and 60-202. The corresponding CEC sections to NEC 725 c) are
CEC 16-200 thru 16-256.Refer before starting the installation of the antenna connec-
tions to NEC Article 810.The corresponding CEC Articles to NEC 810 is Section 54.
Further pay attention before the cabling works to NEC 770, 810, 800, 810-57, 400-4,
410-57, and CEC Rules 16-224, 54-802, 4-010, 26-708, and sections 56, 54, 60 .

2.2 Site Requirements

Prior to the commencement of installation, the site must have been prepared as follows:
– The site-specific base construction must have been mounted
– A concrete foundation large enough to accomodate shelter size and weight
is needed for rural sites
– The installation area should be clear of standing water, fallen leaves, mud and
building debris
– Measures should be taken to avoid unauthorized access
– The lightning protection and grounding systems must be complete
– All installation works off 1 phase 230 V AC power supply, including a false current
protection switch must be finished.
The BS 41 shelters should be mounted, after all other work to create the required
infrastructure (antennas/antenna cabling, PCM lines...) is complete.

2.3 Enviromental Conditions

The location of a site may directly effect the correct operation of the base station.
In terms of exessive salt contramination situations it is recommended not to place the
BS41 close to coastal areas in order to avoid shorter maintenance
intervals. It is recommended to keep a distance of about > 500 m from the coast.
Enclosures on coastal sites should not be installed with the air intakes facing directly into
prevailing sea winds or spray.
Installation under trees and foliage is not recommended due to increased levels of
insects etc. which may be drawn into the cooling system by the fans.
In areas of heavy snow fall the base station should be placed at a socket
with an appropriate height, so that the air intakes will not be blocked
by snow.
In areas prone to flooding the base station should not be placed on the ground,
because its bottom section is not waterproof.
Sites located close to exessive airborne dust clouds i.e. cement, coal deposits etc.
should also be minimised in order to avoid contamination of the cooling system and
increased maintenance.
The ambient temperature range is - 45˚C...+55˚C / 37˚F...127˚F.

2.4 Site Configuration

2.6 Equipment Delivery

The BS41 shelters are shipped vertically in wooden crates (or horizontally in case of
transportation by airplane).The crates dimensions are 1950 mm x 900 mm x 850 mm
(HxWxD). Depending on the pre-installed modules inside the shelters, the crate can
weigh up to approx. 190 kg.
The Service2 Shelters will be delivered without backup batteries (weight aspects).
An additional crate contains the batteries.
An imprint gives information for identification on delivery. Handle each crate with
extreme caution to avoid tipping.

2.6.1 Transportation, Loading and Unloading of the BS41

The shelter crate should be transported on an air-suspensioned truck, recommended
with 4WD, min. 2.0 tonnes payload and lifting stage.
For loading and unloading, a 1.000 kg forklift truck or an articulated tyre crane is needed.
Movement of the shelter should be supervised by personnel qualified in heavy
lifting and safety. All personnel must be properly attired, wearing a safety helmet,
safety boots and protective gloves.
To load the shelter onto the transporting vehicle, proceed as follows:
– Manoeuver the forklift truck, with its forks lowered, to the centre of the base of the
shipping crate.
– When the forklift is in position, an adjustable strap has to be positioned around the
crate and secured to the forklift mast eyebolts. Pull the strap tight.
– If the shelter has to be transported without the shipping crate, insert packing
between the forklift tower and the shelter for protection.
– Raise the crate until it is at a suitable height to load onto the transporting vehicle
– Lower the crate onto the transporting vehicle.
– Remove the strap and packing.
– Secure the crate to the transporting vehicle. (this operation is the responsibility of
the company transporting the crate).
To unload the crate from the vehicle, proceed with the following steps:
– Release the straps etc. securing the crate to the transporting vehicle.
– Manoeuver the forklift into position so that the forks are aligned under the centre of
the base of the shipping crate.
– Raise the crate to clear the transporting vehicle and lower it to the ground in the
vicinity of the base construction or concrete base onto which it is to be located.
– Remove the crate and all packing material protecting the shelter.
– Release the bolts securing the shelter to the wooden support. The 4 bolts are
accessible after removal of the plinths front cover.
– Close and lock the main doors.
– Manoeuver the forklift into position so that the forks and the support are on the same
level. Shift or slide the shelter from the support onto the forks.
– When the shelter is in position, an adjustable strap has to be wrapped around the
shelter and forklift mast, to prevent it falling over during transportation. Make sure,
that the paint on the shelter can not be damaged !
– Manoeuver the forklift into position so that the forks and the surface of base
construction are on the same level. Shift or slide the shelter from the forks onto the
base construction.Check the correct position.

2.7 External Cabling Activities

2.7.1 Overview
This chapter gives information required for installing the external cables between
the BS 41 and equipment outside the shelter.
The shelter cannot function without the following cable connections:
– AC mains terminal block - connection point of 230 V AC, 1-phase supply (BS41E)
AC mains terminal block - connection point of 120 V AC, 1-phase supply (BS41U)
– ground screws - foundation grounding system
– Abis interface - PCM links if terrestrial lines will be used: NTPM (BS41E) or CSU
(BS41U)
– transmit / receive antenna connectors - antenna system
optional:
– serial interface - signalling link terminal
– alarm collection terminals (ACTA/ACTC)- external alarm donators
– microwave indoor units - W outdoor units
(if W equipment is used o f r transmission)
All interfaces are located behind the front covers of the plinth. The front covers are
removable, this allows the manipulation of cables coming from ground and being fed
through the IP-panel into the plinth.
The bottom of the plinth contains a module allowing the feeding of cables with
a diameter between 8 and 22 mm into the shelter while protecting the shelter
from water and dust.
The cable feeding module allows the routing of cable with a width of 420 mm.

2.7.2 Ground and Power Supply Connections BS41E

The BS41 has to be connected to the site specific ground system before starting the
connection of AC mains cable.
The ground system on site must comply with the standards IEC 1024-1 and
VDE 0185.
A ground cable (16 mm2, copper conductor) must be connected at the M8 ground stud,
located at the lower left or right side of the shelters plinth.
The ground stud is connected via an internal ground cable inside the shelter plinth
with the PE-plate at EMI panel.
Connect the BS41 shelter and ground system as follows:
– Use the nearest connection point of the ground system.
– Ascertain the distances between the connection points of the ground system
and the ground stud of the shelter.
– Cut the cables to the required length.
– Remove the cable covering at the end to connect to the ground bolt
(length approx. 7 mm) and fix a double crimped cable lug M8.
– Connect the prepared cable end to the ground bolt.
– Tighten the nut firmly.
The (optional) adjoining Service2 shelters must be grounded using a metal stud and will
be connected to the bottom left and right corners of each shelter respectively. These
ground studs (M8) are also internally connected to the PE-plate of the appropriate
shelter.
A 3pole WAGO terminal block, located in the plinth of BS41 , is the connection point for
the AC mains cable.
The BS41E will be powered by 230 V, 50 Hz, single phase.
The following figure shows the recommended cabling for the power supply and
ground connections.

2.7.3 Ground and Power Supply Connections BS41U

The BS41U provides ground bolt M8, located at the front edges of the shelter for
direct connection to ground according NEC Section 810-58(b). The dimensions of the
required ground conductor has to be not less than 10 AWG (American Wire Gauge).
All other supply conductors should be not less than 12 AWG.
The BS41U has to be connected to the site specific ground system before starting the
installation of power supply wires.
After connection the BS41U to AC or DC power supply sources, in parts of basestation
equipment hazardous energy levels do exist.
The 4pole WAGO-terminal block for the AC mains input is located inside plinth of the
shelter, accessible after removing the cover plate.
Make sure that the AC mains cable is deenergized before connection with the
! BS41.
Take measures against unauthorized “switch on” at the Square D distribution !

The BS41U shelter requires a 2 phase, 3 wire plus ground (PE) connection with the
AC mains (120 V AC, 60Hz), each phase must be protected by UL listed branch circuit
breaker 25 A, long delay.
Install the connection in the following stages:
– Check the actual distance between terminal block and the connection point.
– Cut the cable to the required length.
– Remove the insulation of the cable and cut back the wire insulation at the end;
that is to be connected to the terminal block.
– Lead the prepared cable through the cable entry at the bottom of the shelter.
– Insert the wires into the WAGO terminals.
– Lead the main cable to the connection point for 120 V AC.

2.7.4 Abis-Interface - PCM Link Terminal

The Abis interfaces PCM0 and PCM1,located on EMI panel, provides the communica-
tion links to the neighbouring Base Stations or to the controlling BSC.The Abis interfaces
are terminated with Overvoltage Protections (OVPT) which protects the boards inside
the BS41 against overvoltage (residual voltage < 1 kV).
Two types of OVPT exist: OVPTCOAX for 75 Ohm and OVPT for 120 Ohm cables).
Note for BS41U:
i The PCM ports on OVPT are intended to be connected to an adjacently and nearby
located CSU providing overvoltage protection or microwave connection.

Depending on the different cable impedances it is recommended to:

– Use screened cable containing 8/10 shielded twisted pairs for 120 Ohm PCM lines,
e.g. S-09YS(ST)CY 8x2x0.6/1.2.
– Use coaxial cables for 75 Ohm wiring, e.g. 2YCCY 0.4/2.6. (BS41E only)
The outer diameter of the PCM cable must not exeed 8 mm.
The maximum cable length depends on the attenuation of the cable, in order to fulfill
the requirements of minimum voltage levels to be provided at Abis interface according
to PCM standards.
The cable shielding must be connected to the relevant ground pins as close as possible
(in order to avoid EMC/RF interfering effects).

PCM 0 PCM 1

Fig. 2.16 Access to the Abis interfaces

For easy connecting of the PCM cables to the OVPT it is useful to loose the OVPT-plate
at the EMI panel:
– Remove both internal PCM cables from their SubD 25 interface.
– Unscrew the 6 screws as shown in the figure above.

– Take out the OVPT-plate and fit the incoming PCM cable through the cutout in the
EMI panel.
– Fix the cables at PCM interfaces of the OVPT.Use the strain relieving facility !
– Setup the OVPT-plate on the EMI-panel and fix it by using the 6 screws.

Fig. 2.17 Lower side of OVPT-plate (OVPT for 120 Ohm impedance)

2.7.4.1 Abis-Interface for 120 Ohm Cable Impedance

Connect the Abis-interface with twisted pair cable to the PCM link terminal as follows:
– Cut the cable to the required length and cut back the outer insulation
(approx.12 cm). Remove the wire insulation (8 mm).
– Wrap the exposed cable screen, which will be fixed at the strain relieving.
– Fix the prepared cable close to the strain relieving by straps.
– Insert the wires into the terminals of the OVPT.
– Insert the additional wire (shielding potential) into one of the ground terminals
(e.g. no. 24).
– Lead the additional wire and the uplink and downlink wires on the shortest route
(that means without sleeves) between the stress relieving and the terminals.
– All unconnected PCM lines (4 wires per line) must be connected to one of the
ground terminals.
It is advantageous to protect the short part of the cable between stress relieving and
terminal block with a shrink tube or adhesive tape, exepted the cable screen.

– Cut back the outer insulation(length approx. 120 mm).
– Unbraid the main cable screen.
– Twist and tinn the screen wires and the additional wire.
– Insulate the screening with insulation sleeve.
– Fix an SMA-female connector for each PCM-up and down line at the end to be
connected to the OVPT.
– Connect the prepared cable to the matching connectors.
– Use a torque spanner for SMA connector (35 N/cm).
– Fix the screening at the strain relief of OVPTCOAX.

2.7.7 Alarm Collection Terminal - external Signal Sensors

The access for cabling from external signal sensors on site is the Alarm Collection
Terminal(ACTM).
The ACTA (part of the ACTM) provides 8 WAGO terminal blocks with 12 pins each for
connecting of 48 site inputs.
The ACTA is mounted at the EMI panel of the shelter.
For connection of wires, the ACTA must be unscrewed from EMI panel for easier access
to the terminal blocks.
On the ACTA a copper bracket exists for strain relieving and cable screen grounding.
The WAGO terminals are labelled X1 ... X10, the terminal blocks X1...X8 are used for
connection of site inputs.
The following tables give information on the pinning of the terminals.
After all wiring works are finished, the ACTA must be screwed at EMI panel in
its original position.

2.7.9 Antenna Connections

The BTSE has to be connected to the transmit and receive antennas. The antenna
configuration and the required cabling are dependent on the site and the type of
combining. For detailed information refer to the site-specific documentation or use the
corresponding customer documents.
For installation and service purposes it is useful to know, which hardware is connected
to which cell. The numbering, seen from the top of the antenna pole, starts at an
azimuth angle of 0˚ (north) and rotates clockwise.
The first existing cell whose beam centre line lies at 0˚ or more, is defined as
cell 0 or sector 0. The next one following in the same direction cell is cell 1 etc.
In case of omni cell the cell no. is 0.

Jumper cable with a max. diameter 1/2” have to be used because the thick
cables from the antenna are not able to enter the shelters.
With regard to overvoltage protection it is recommended to ground the outer
conductor of antenna feeder cables where they are connected with the jumper cables
outside the BS41.
The antenna cables must be routed through the EMI panel forward to the 7/16” front
connectors of DUAMCO/FICOM and to N-type front connector of DIAMCO.
Note that being able to close the doors means that the depth of the right angle
i connector is not allowed to exeed 45 mm.

2.7.10 Installation of the Tower Mounted Amplifier

A Tower Mounted Amplifier will be used to reach a BTS sensivity better than GSM
requirements at the antenna connector and to compensate a high antenna cable loss.
The TMA should placed as close to the antenna as possible. It will be supplied and
supervised by the multicoupling equipment (DIAMCO or DUAMCO) in the shelter it is
connected to.
In case of using a DUAMCO as antenna combiner inside the shelter, only one feeder
cable is needed between the TMA and the BTS (for both TX and RX signals) due to full
duplex architecture of the TMA.

ground screw

Fig. 2.31 Bottom view of the Tower Mounted Amplifier

For mounting of the TMA may be done as follows in accordance with Fig. 2.32
– While still on ground, join each of the 2 brackets with one screw M8, but leave the
brackets open.
Be sure not to loose the remaining 2 screws.
– First connect the TMA to the main feeder, then with the jumper cable to the antenna.
Do not forget to consider thermal dimensional changes of the main feeder.
– Position the TMA on the mast/pole and tighten the remaining 2 screws.
– Connect the grounding cable on the ground screw and the nearest grounding facility
at the mast or pole.
The grounding cable‘s eyes must have the right size for the TMA‘s M8 ground screw
and the cable should be have an area of at least of 16 mm2.
The other end should be safely connected to a well grounded point on the mast.
Then the mounting of the TMA is completed.
Note, that the max. diameter of the mast do not exeed 140 mm, if the fixing material will
i be used as shown in the following figure.

Fig. 2.32 TMA with mounting brackets

The TMA may be also mounted on a wall by means of suitable screws (not supplied
with the TMA)
The corresponding holes in the mounting plate have a diameter of 9 mm.
The proper way of mounting the TMA on a wall varies from case to case. The best
method can only be decided by the installer.
Please note, however, that the wall itself does probably not provide adequate grounding,
it may be insulated.
It is absolutely necessary to prepare and connect an adequate grounding cable to the
! TMA‘s grounding point.

Do not consider the thermals dimensional changes of the antenna feeder cable.

2.8.2 Installation of Link Equipment

The link equipment acts as a front end, to provide the Abis interface.
Different equipment can be used for wire or radio transmission. Which equipment
will be used depends on customer requirements.
The number of link equipment, which can be installed depends on the height of the units.

For connections between Abis interface in the Base Shelter and link equipment in
i the Service Shelter, pay attention to the recommendation CCITT G.703. Here it is stated
that the receive level compared with the transmit level should not be lower than 6 dB.

For installation of link equipment a mounting kit, designed for 19” units with up to
2 HU is necessary.
The installation of link equipment in the mounting kit always has to start at the top..
All uneqipped slots must be closed by cover plates, so that the airflow inside the
shelter will not be affected.
In case of microwave transmission, the indoor units inside the Service Shelter must
be connected via the microwave antenna cables with the tower mounted outdoor units.
The following figure shows the screws, which must be loosed for opening the cable
feeding module in the lower part of the shelter.

Connect the microwave antenna cables to the indoor units as follows:

– Loose the front part of cable feeding module and take it out.
– Feed the microwave cable through the cable feeding module forward to the front
connectors of microwave indoor units.
– Fix the microwave cables at the connectors.

2.10 Setup of Connections between the Shelters

For function of the BS 41 with a Sevice2 shelter of BS241 together, cable connections
between the shelters are necessary.
The installation of these cables can be started, after the shelters are fixed
to the foundation or base construction in the correct order and the shelters are
connected by flanges.
The supplier provides mounting kits, which include all parts and cables necessary for
installing the required connections.
All cables between the shelters will be routed through the flanges in the lower part
of the shelters.
For cable routing from one shelter into another (AC, DC power supply, battery cable)
without leaving the EMC-protected area, a cabling channel is provided.
For this reason holes that are covered by plates for single shelters and the end-
shelters of a row are provided at both sides of a shelter.
For mounting and assembling of the shelter connection, proceed in accordance with
Fig. 2.47 by taking the following steps:
– Remove the cover plates from those sides of the shelters that should be connect
with the EMC/IP connection kit.
– Setup the shelters side by side and adjust them to each other both in horizontal and
vertical direction. The shelters allowed to be misaligned by a maximum of +/- 2 mm
in height and depht direction. The shelter walls are allowed to be apart from each
other by a maximum of 7 mm.

– Slide the bigger sealing rings (pos. no. 3) on the flanges (pos. no. 2).
– Slide one of the smaller sealing rings (pos. no. 4) on the tube.
– Insert the tube in the interconnection hole of the shelters to be connected.
– Inside of that shelter, where the sealing ring is located that was slided on the tube in
step 4, slide one of the flanges on the tube. Position the flange to the shelter wall,
and fix it with four screws (pos. no. 5) loose to the shelter wall.
– Slide the other sealing ring (pos. no. 4) on the other side of the tube.
– Slide the other flange on the other side of the tube, position it to the shelter wall and
fix it with four screws.
– Fasten all screws. The flange plane marked in the drawing must rest with no gap on
the shelter wall on both sides.
