Objective:
By completing this worksheet, you will be able to:
Mean, median and mode are known as averages in Statistics. They are indicative of
the central tendency or center of a set of
data.
For a set of data 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3,………,𝑥𝑛 , with the corresponding frequencies 𝑓1, 𝑓2 , 𝑓3,…… 𝑓𝑛
is usually displayed in the form of a frequency table:
𝒙 𝑥1 𝑥2 𝑥3 …. 𝑥𝑛
The mean of the distribution is given
𝒇 𝑓1 𝑓2 𝑓3 …. 𝑓𝑛
by:
𝑓1 𝑥1 + 𝑓2 𝑥2 +𝑓3 𝑥3 +⋯+𝑓𝑛 𝑥𝑛
Mean =
𝑓1 +𝑓2 +𝑓3+⋯….+𝑓𝑛
If we write the sum of 𝑓𝑥 as Σ𝑓𝑥 and the sum of 𝑓 as Σ𝑓, then we have
Σ𝑓𝑥
𝑥̅ =
Σ𝑓

Q1. The amount of money spent by the visitors at a carnival was recorded.
Amount Spent ($) 40 60 80 100 160 200
Number of visitors 12 32 54 68 18 16
Find the mean amount of money spent by the visitors at the carnival.
Q2. The weekly salaries of the employees in a company are recorded. Find the mean
weekly salary of the employees.
Weekly Salary ($) Number of employees
40 12 Working:
60 32
80 54
100 68
160 18
200 16
Q3. The time taken, in minutes, for a group of teenagers to cycle between two parks
is recorded.
Time Taken ( x minutes) Number of teenagers
15 < 𝑥 ≤ 20 5
20 < 𝑥 ≤ 25 10
25 < 𝑥 ≤ 30 20
30 < 𝑥 ≤ 35 15
35 < 𝑥 ≤ 40 18
Calculate an estimate for the mean time taken by the teenagers to cycle between the
two parks. Mid-value(X) is calculated by
