Class 8
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Statistics
Worksheet # 15-B

Student’s Name: ___________________ Date: ___________

Objective:
By completing this worksheet, you will be able to:
 make an appropriate use of mean, median and mode.

 Mean, median and mode are known as averages in Statistics. They are indicative of
the central tendency or center of a set of data.

 Mean for ungrouped data is calculated by

𝒔𝒖𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝚺𝑿
=
𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝒏

 Median is the middle score of a distribution. To calculate the median

 Arrange your numbers in numerical order.
 Count how many numbers you have.
 If you have an odd number, the number exactly in the middle is the median of
the data.
 If you have an even number, divide by 2. Go to the number in that position
and average it with the number in the next higher position to get the median.
 Mode is the most frequently occurring score in a distribution, simply select the most
common score as the mode.
Q1. Find the mean, median and mode of the following sets of numbers.
a) 6, 5, 4, 1, 2, 1, 5, 4, 8
Mean Median Mode

b) 39.6, 12, 13.5, 22.6, 31.3, 5.5, 8.4, 4.7,11.1,5.5

Mean Median Mode

c) -9, -7, -11, -5.5, -7.1, -8.9

Mean Median Mode
Q2. The temperatures, taken at midnight, of 6 consecutive nights in Singapore are
given as follows:
27 ⁰C, 26 ⁰C, 28 ⁰C, 23 ⁰C, 10 ⁰C, 45 ⁰C
(i) State the modal temperature. _____________

(ii) Calculate the mean temperature.

(iii) Calculate the median temperature.

(iv) The temperature taken at midnight of the 7th day in Singapore was 22⁰C. If
22 ⁰C is added to the above set of data, what will be the new modal
temperature? _______________________

(v) Calculate the new mean temperature.

(vi) Calculate the new median temperature.

(vii) Compare the results. What do you observe?

Q3. The number of books a groups of students borrowed from the school library is
recorded.
Number of books 0 1 2 3 4
Number of students 2 𝑥 3 4 1

a) If the mean number of books the students borrowed is 1.8, find the value of 𝑥.

b) If the median of the distribution is 2, find possible values of 𝑥.

c) If the modal number of books the students borrowed is 3, state the greatest
possible value of 𝑥.

Q4. The median of 8 numbers is 4.5. Given that seven of the numbers are 9, 2, 3, 4,
12, 13 and 1. Find the eighth number.
