Engineering Drawing for Civil

Engineering
Introduction to Engineering
Drawing for Civil
Engineering
 Objective:
To enable students to learn basics of
general drawing and civil
engineering drawing.
4 Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
 Upon successful completion of this module, shapes, engineering curves, engineering
students will be able to: scales, isometric views and orthographic
projections by using drawing instruments
1. Define different types of drawings, views and
projections used in civil engineering,4. Distinguish between different views of solid
geometric shapes, engineering curves and objects
engineering scales. List different drawing
5. Select appropriates symbols, line types,
instruments and lines used in civil engineering
dimensioning method to represent different
drawings
materials and objects in civil engineering
2. Demonstrate and classify the drawings of drawings.Evaluate written description of the
different views of the solid objects and points, lines, planes and solid and draw their
different type of engineering scales orthographic projections accordingly
3. Make use of drawing instruments used in
engineering drawings. Develop
understanding of 1st and 3rd angle
orthographic projections of points, lines,
planes and solids. Construct geometric

 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing.
 Types of lines.
 Examples.
 Conclusion.
7

Introduction:
Engineering drawing

 A drawing is a graphic representation of an object, or a part

of it, and is the result of creative thought by an engineer or
technician.

 A graphic representation of an idea, concept or an entity

which actually or potentially exists in life.
8

Introduction (Cont..)

 Sketch: made without drafting tools... Just pencil and paper is

used. Scale is approximate, not accurate, but the sketch should
still look like the object

 Drawing: made with drafting tools... Ruler, set squares,

protractor and compass. Scale should be accurate and the
drawing carefully made
Types of Drawings:

Engineering drawings
Architectural drawings
Technical drawings
Shop drawings
Types of Drawings (Cont..)

1. Engineering drawing
 Definition:
A schematic representation of a building, object, or
component made according to defined conventions and
projected to serve in the construction
2. Architectural drawing
 Definition
A sketch, diagram, plan, or schematic diagram used to
design, construct, and document buildings and other structures
Types of Drawings (Cont..)

3. Technical drawing:
 Definition
A graphic using lines and symbols that follows specific conventions of
scale and projection, typically used in architecture, construction,
engineering, or mapping
4. A shop drawing:
 Definition
It is a drawing or set of drawings produced by the contractor, supplier,
manufacturer, subcontractor, or fabricator
12 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing

 Drawing Paper
Drawing paper is the paper, on which drawing is to be
made.
All engineering drawings are made on sheets of paper of
strictly defined sizes.

13 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing
(Cont..)
 Triangles (setsquares)
They are used to construct the most common angles (i.e. 30, 45, 60) in technical drawings. The 450
x 450 and 300 x 600 triangles are the most commonly used for ordinary work.

14 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing
(Cont..)
 T- square
It is used primarily to draw horizontal
lines and for guiding the triangles
when drawing vertical and inclined
lines.
 French curve
It is used to draw irregular curves
that are not circle arcs. The shape
varies according to the shape of
irregular curve

15 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing
(Cont..)
 Protractor
It is used for laying out and measuring
angle
 Pencil
The student and professional man should
be equipped with a selection of good,
well-sharpened pencil

16 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing
(Cont..)
 Pencils
Classification according to lead hardness is:

Hard grades Medium grades Soft grades

9HHardest 3H Hardest 2B
8H 2H 3B
7H H 4B
6H F 5B
5H HB 6B
4HSoftest B Softest 7B

17 Instruments used in making Engineering Drawing
(Cont..)
 Compass
It is used to draw circles and
arcs both in pencil and ink. It
consists of two legs pivoted at
the top. One leg is equipped
with a steel needle attached
with a screw
