Q.1. Explain Galerkin’s method. Solve the following differential equation by Galerkin’s method.

of nodes.

Q.2. For the truss shown in Figure 2, determine the nodal displacements and the stress in each member.

Discuss the properties of shape functions. Derive the shape functions of quadratic and cubic one-dimensional element in global, local
and natural co-ordinates.

Q.3. The front window of a car is defogged by supplying warm air at 90°F to its inner surface. The glass has a thermal conductivity of k =
0.8 W/m°C with a thickness of approximately 114 in. With the supply fan running at moderate speed, the heat transfer coefficient
associated with the air is 50 W/m2. K. The outside air is at a temperature of 20°F with an associated heat transfer coefficient of 110
W/m2. K. Determine (a) the temperatures of the inner and outer surfaces of the glass and (b) the heat loss through the glass if the area
of the glass is approximately 10 ft2.

Q.4. Explain work-equivalence for distributed loads on beams and derive the nodal loads. The simply supported beam shown in Figure
3 is subjected to a uniform transverse load, as shown. Using two equal-length elements and work-equivalent nodal loads, write the
finite element formulation.

Derive the strain displacement relation matrix from the first principles of a triangle element. Estimate the shape functions of a
triangular element at the point P(25, 38) of a CST with the coordinates 1(0,0), 2(50,10) and 3(22,60). All dimensions are in mm.

Q.5. Explain the importance of consideration of weights in one Gaussian quadrature formula? Evaluate the following integral
using two point sampling formulation of G-L-Q.
