Assignment - Root Locus

Step 5 & 6 from Example 2

1. This is your assignment for today. Complete the given example right here on LMS (No other format accepted)
2. Using the equation below, develop the root locus plot using your roll number in place of a, b, c

2
s + as + 3
GH =
2
s(s + 1)(s + 2)(s + bs + c)

If any of the digit happens to be zero, simply replace it with 1

Once again, only word format accepted and you will have 24 hours to submit it. No late submission will be entertained

As my roll number is 119. So,

a=1

b=1

c=9

GH=\frac{s^2+s+3}{s(s+1)(s+2)(s^2+s+9)}

Step 1:

Zeros of open loop= -0.5 + 1.66j, -0.5 - 1.66j

Poles of open loop= 0, -1, -2, -0.5 + 2.9j, -0.5 - 2.9j

Step 2:

Form real axis line segments from right alternatively

Step 3:

Number of nite zeros = 2

Number of nite poles = 5

Since number of poles is greater than number of zeros, we will have 3 in nite zeros as well
Step 4:

Find center of asymptotes:

ΣP − ΣZ
σa =
\N − \N
p z

0 − 1 − 2 − 0.5 + 2.9j − 0.5 − 2.9j + 0.5 − 1.66j + 0.5 − 1.66j

σa =
3

−3
σa =
3

σa = −1

(2k + 1)180
θa =
\N − \N
p z

Putting k = 0

θa = 60

Putting k = 1

θa = 180

Putting k=2

θa = 300

Why did we put only 3 values of k?

Because, we had only 3 in nite zeros!
Step 5:
Find breakaway or break in point (if needed)
m n
1 1
∑ = ∑
σ − Zi σ − Pi
i=1 i=1

If there exists a real axis root locus branch between two open loop poles, then there will be a break-away point in
between these two open loop poles.
So, the break even point is -0.5.
Step 6:

From the step 4, Angles of Asymptotes are 60,180 and 300. For 60 and 300 the line cross the imaginary axis. From
the graph we can see it cross the imaginary axis at point 1.5 to 1.8 and -1.5 to -1.8.
