What’s In?

In your previous lesson, you have learned about the correct use of coordinating
conjunctions.
It was discussed that coordinating conjunctions are words that are used to connect
independent clauses to make a compound sentence. They give equal importance to the
sentences they connect.
Examples of sentences with Coordinating Conjunctions.

3. I want to buy more books, but they are expensive.
4. I have to study hard, or I will fail.
5. We need to work fast, for the deadline is already on Monday.

What’s New?

1. What products are being advertised?

2. What advertisement do you like best?
3. Are the advertisements attractive? convincing? truthful?
4. Do you believe what the advertisements are trying to say? Why?

Each of the sentences above is a complex sentence. A complex sentence is made

up of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The underlined words
make up an independent clause. It has a subject and a predicate. This clause expresses a
complete thought by itself.
.
The words that are not underlined make up the dependent or subordinate clause.
This clause depends on the independent clause for meaning. Dependent clause may have

4
a subject and a predicate but do not express a complete thought or idea. Dependent clause
is introduced by a subordinate conjunction.

Let’s go over sentence no. 1

1. We need to find out all necessary information when we buy a product being
advertised.
We need to find out all necessary information
This is the independent clause. The subject is we and the predicate is need. It
also expresses a complete thought or idea.
when we buy a product being advertised
This is the dependent clause. It has also a subject which is we and a predicate
which is buy but the group of words itself does not express a complete thought or idea.
This clause depends on the independent clause for meaning.
The word when is a subordinate conjunction that introduces the dependent
clause.
Subordinating conjunctions are words used to join dependent clauses to
independent ones.
