Let’s try to find out what you know about subordinating conjunctions.
Fill in the blanks with the correct subordinating conjunction. Choose your answer
from the words inside the box.

In your previous lesson, you have learned about the correct use of coordinating
conjunctions.
It was discussed that coordinating conjunctions are words that are used to connect
independent clauses to make a compound sentence. They give equal importance to the
sentences they connect.
Examples of sentences with Coordinating Conjunctions.
1. Books must be taken care of, and treasured like jewels.
2. Our teachers tell us to study well, so we can improve our grades.
3. I want to buy more books, but they are expensive.
4. I have to study hard, or I will fail.
5. We need to work fast, for the deadline is already on Monday.

a subject and a predicate but do not express a complete thought or idea. Dependent clause
is introduced by a subordinate conjunction.

8. while - It can be used to indicate that two things happen simultaneously. It
emphasizes the continuousness of an action more than the conjunction
“when”.
Ex. I often get distracted while trying to study.
9. unless - It is used to introduce an exception to a statement.
Ex. We do not buy things unless we need them.
10. where - It is used to express at, in or to what place.
Ex. This is the place where we had our recollection.

Form a complex sentence by combining each pair of clauses. Use the
appropriate conjunction. Write the correct sentence.
Example:
I hate it. I got low grades.
Answer: I hate it whenever I got low grades.
1. The immune system goes to work. Something that causes diseases goes into the body.
2. Hang the wet clothes under the sun. They will dry easily.
3. We are not kind to nature. Nature will be unkind to us.
4. We clean our surroundings. We must exert effort to plant and maintain greenery.

Now that you have already learned the correct use of some subordinating
conjunctions, let’s try if you can construct a complex sentence. Complete each
sentence with an appropriate clause introduced by the subordinating conjuction in the
parentheses.
