The 37-year-old country singer remembered writing "Over

You" with her now ex-husband to help him grieve the loss
of his brother.
It’s been nearly six years since Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton went their
separate ways, but during their time together, the former spouses shared some
special moments.

Now Lambert is opening up about one of those moments, explaining how she
and her ex not only made beautiful music together, they made music that
“helped his family heal” years after suffering a devastating loss.

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother, and it’s one of those moments
where, even if you’re married to someone, sometimes you find something new
about them,” Lambert shared in an interview with singer-songwriter and
podcast host Kelleigh Bannen for Apple’s Essentials Radio. “Dudes don’t open
up about things, but he started telling me about the experience of it all.”

Shelton’s older brother, Richie, died in a car accident in 1990, at the age of 24.
The country crooner has said the event changed his live forever.

Given that Shelton is a prolific songwriter himself, Lambert asked him if he’d
written about the painful experience. He told her he’d never made that
attempt to work through his grief in song.

“He was like, 'Well, my dad just says, "You don't get over it. You just get used
to it."' And I was like, 'Well, could we write it? Do you want to try or is that
invasive?'" she recalled. "'I would never try to write your story because I didn’t
live it, but maybe I could help because I’m an outside perspective. I feel your
pain talking to me right now.'"

That conversation led the two to sit down and pen “Over You,” a track from
Lambert’s 2011 studio album, “Four the Record,” that tackles the sting of grief.
“I'll miss you/ They say I'll be OK/ But I'm not going to ever get over you,” the
lyrics read.

The single went on to win Lambert and Shelton both the CMA and the ACM
awards for song of the year. But looking back on the track now, that’s not what
stands out for Lambert.

"It was really a special moment," she said of creating the hit. "I’m so glad we
shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that together."

But ultimately, it’s a wound that never fully heals.

“Look, you’re never gonna get over it,” Shelton said in a 2018 interview
with Cowboys & Indians magazine. “For me, my brother was my big brother. I
mean, I wanted to be him. I wanted to look like him, dress like him, listen to
what he listened to, and be into the things he was into. So when he was killed
in a car accident, it was literally like the world went silent. There was a void in
my world all of a sudden, and I’m still not over it. I’m just used to it.”

Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton split in 2015, but the exes will always share the
moving ballad "Over You." The country singers co-wrote the song in 2011 about
Shelton's older brother, Richie, who died in a car accident in 1990. He was 24.
In an interview with Essentials Radio on Apple Music, Lambert opened up about writing
the song with Shelton, giving a rare look into their former marriage.

Lambert said that Shelton's father, Richard, told him, "You don't get over it. You just get
used to it." Lambert asked Shelton if he wanted to write about the experience but he
was worried about it being "invasive."
"I would never try to write your story because I didn't live it, but maybe I could help
because I'm an outside perspective, but I feel your pain talking to me right now,"
Lambert said of her conversation with her then-husband.

The "Bluebird" singer, who is now married to former police officer Brendon McLoughlin,
described the songwriting process as "really a special moment" in her 10-year
relationship with Shelton.

"I'm so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that
together," she said.

Shelton and Lambert split in 2015, and the 44-year-old country crooner has since
become engaged to Gwen Stefani, who he's also co-written several songs with during
their time together.

Miranda Lambert has opened up about the special moment she got to share with ex-
husband Blake Shelton when they worked together on their track, Over You. The former
couple teamed up to write the award-winning single in memory of Blake’s late brother
Richie who died aged 24 in 1990 following a car crash, when The Voice coach Blake was
14-years-old. Looking back at the experience during the latest episode of Essentials
Radio on Apple Music, Miranda explained: ‘My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother
and it’s one of those moments where even if you’re married to someone, sometimes
you find something new about them. ‘Dudes don’t open up about things but he started
telling me about the experience of it all. And I was like, “Have you ever written about it?”

The Bluebird singer then explained how Blake’s father used to say, ‘You don’t get over it,
you just get used to it’. She continued: ‘And I was like, “Well, could we write it? Do you
want to try or is that invasive?”.’

Miranda recalled telling Blake: ‘I would never try to write your story because I didn’t live
it, but maybe I could help because I’m an outside perspective but I feel your pain talking
to me right now.’ Reminiscing on the moment, she added: ‘It was really a special
moment and I’m so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have
that together.’

Indeed, the emotional ballad touched the hearts of listeners as it went to win the CMA
award for song of the year in 2012, as well as the ACM award for song of the year. The
former couple were together for 10 years and married for four before announcing their
split in 2015.

Miranda Lambert is looking back on a "special moment" she shared with Blake
Shelton during their four-year marriage.
The country music star, 37, opened up about co-writing her 2011 song "Over You"
with Shelton, 44, in the latest episode of Essentials Radio on Apple Music, sharing
that she's "so glad" to have shared that experience with The Voice coach.

The emotional ballad — which won the pair a CMA Award for Song of the Year in
2012 — was inspired by Shelton's late brother Richie, who died in a car accident in
1990 at the age of 24.

"My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother and it's one of those moments where even
if you're married to someone, sometimes you find something new about them,"
Lambert recalled of their collaboration. "Dudes don't open up about things but he
started telling me about the experience of it all. And I was like, 'Have you ever written
about it?' "

According to the "Bluebird" singer, Shelton said no and explained to her that his
father used to say, "'You don't get over it. You just get used to it.'"

"And I was like, 'Well, could we write it? Do you want to try or is that invasive?' "
Lambert remembered asking her then-husband, explaining that she told him, "'I would
never try to write your story because I didn't live it, but maybe I could help because

Looking back at the experience, Lambert said, "It was really a special moment and I'm
so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that together."

The former couple were together for 10 years and married for four before announcing
their split in 2015. At the time, they said in a joint statement, "This is not the future
we envisioned. And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately."

While onstage in Nashville, the country star opened up about how the
country music capital of the world has seen her through some “highs and
lows"
Miranda Lambert candidly reflected on a difficult time in her life during a recent
performance in Nashville.

As the country star, 36, took the stage at Bridgestone Arena on Friday as part of
her Wildcard tour, she spoke about how the country music capital of the world has
seen her through some “highs and lows,” which included her divorce from Blake
Shelton in 2015.

“I feel like Nashville is somewhere where you can go if you need to be a dreamer and
not be judged about it. I spent a lot of time here on highs and lows,” she said
according to Billboard.

“I went through a really hard time in my life,” Lambert continued. “I moved here in
2015 in the middle of a s— show, but I was lifted up by people who were like, ‘We
got you, girl.’ My friends and my songwriters and my fans and everybody here.”

Following the show, Lambert called the performance a “dream come true.”

“Thank you Nashville for an amazing night,” she wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post.
“I haven’t played Bridgestone Arena in 8 years. Coming back to play for a sold out
crowd was a dream come true!”

Shelton, 43, Lambert were together for 10 years and married for four before splitting
in July 2015. At the time, they lived together in Oklahoma.

Soon after their separation, Shelton began dating girlfriend Gwen Stefani, 50, and the
pair recently celebrated their four-year anniversary.

Lambert has also found love again with husband Brendan McLoughlin, a NYPD
officer, after meeting outside of  Good Morning America in November 2018, as the
country superstar performed on the show with her band the Pistol Annies. Sunday
marks the pair’s one-year wedding anniversary.
Since going public with their relationship last year, Lambert hasn’t been shy about
singing her husband’s praises, including how much joy he’s brought into her life.

Last September, before performing “Tin Man” in Atlantic City, Lambert told the
crowd that although she’d be singing a “sad” song, she’s in a very different place
these days.

“Lucky for me, I’m not in a sad time anymore in my life, thank you to my sweet
husband,” she said, as McLoughlin stood by the side of the stage.

Lambert also appreciates that her husband, who’s currently on leave from the police
force, shares her same spirit of adventure.

“My husband is very open and happy to travel and could be ready to go anywhere in
15 minutes,” Lambert told PEOPLE in November. “I love that. Kind of met a kindred
spirit there.”

Looking back! Miranda Lambert has nothing but fond memories with

ex-husband Blake Shelton, especially when it comes to the “special
moment” they shared cowriting his 2011 song “Over You.”

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother, and it’s one of those
moments where even if you’re married to someone, sometimes you
find something new about them,” the country superstar, 37, said on
Monday, March 28, during an interview on Apple Music’s Essentials
Radio. “Dudes don’t open up about things, but he started telling me
about the experience of it all. And I was like, ‘Have you ever written
about it?'”
When Blake, 44, said he hadn’t, she suggested that they make a song. “I would never
try to write your story because I didn’t live it, but maybe I could help because I’m an
outside perspective, but I feel your pain talking to me right now,” she remembered.

Together, they penned the tune, which is inspired by The Voice coach losing his older
brother, Richie, in a car accident in 1990. He was 24 at the time. After its release, “Over
You” went on to win Song of the Year at both the Country Music Awards and Academy
of Country Music Awards.
The “Somethin’ Bad” songstress added, “It was really a special moment and I’m so glad
we shared that song and that it helped his family heal, to have that together.”

Miranda and the “God’s Country” crooner first started dating in 2006 and got engaged in
2010. They officially tied the knot in 2011 but announced their split in July 2015.
During an interview with Health in November 2019, the Texas native opened up about
her public divorce. “When everyone’s worried about your personal life, it makes you feel
like, ‘Well, if you could just spend some of that time talking about my actual art, that
would be great!’” she said at the time. “But I guess I asked for it, getting into this
business. I’m never gonna get used to the public eye in that way.”
Miranda has since moved on with Brendan McLoughlin, whom she married in January
2019. Blake, for his part, started dating Gwen Stefani in 2015, following her split from
ex-husband Gavin Rossdale. While they haven’t tied the knot just yet, Blake and Gwen
announced their engagement in October 2020, after five years together.
“Hey, [Gwen Stefani], thanks for saving my 2020,” the singer wrote on Instagram when
going public with their big news. “And the rest of my life. I love you. I heard a YES!”

Memories remain. Miranda Lambert recalled writing her song “Over You” with ex-
husband Blake Shelton during a Monday, March 29, episode of “Essentials Radio” on Apple
Music.

“My ex-husband, Blake, had lost a brother and it’s one of those moments where even if you’re
married to someone, sometimes you find something new about them,” the country singer, 37,
told Kelleigh Bannen while discussing the stories behind her hit songs. “Dudes don’t open up
about things, but he started telling me about the experience of it all.”

The Pistol Annies frontwoman asked her then-husband if he’d written about his experience, to
which he said no.

According to Lambert, the Voice coach, 44, told her, “Well, my dad just says, ‘You don’t get
over it. You just get used to it.’”

Still, the “Bluebird” singer pushed, offering to help him get the words out at the time.

“‘I would never try to write your story because I didn’t live it, but maybe I could help because
I’m an outside perspective. … I feel your pain talking to me right now,’” she recalled saying. “It
was really a special moment and I’m so glad we shared that song and that it helped his family
heal, to have that together.”

The country stars finalized their divorce in July 2015, hours after they announced their
split to Us Weekly.
The pair first met while performing an onstage duet in 2005 and wed in May 2011. Though both
singers have spoken about their marriage since the divorce, the Grammy winner usually brings
up her ex-husband more subtly.

“I moved here in 2015 in the middle of a s–t show, but I was lifted up by people who were like,
‘We got you, girl.’ My friends and my songwriters and my fans and everybody here,” Lambert
said during a Nashville concert in January 2020, alluding to the timing of the split.

Both Lambert and Shelton have moved on since their divorce. The “Mama’s Broken Heart”
crooner is married to Brendan McLoughlin, while Shelton is engaged to singer Gwen Stefani.

When Lambert married the former New York City police officer in February 2019 after a
whirlwind romance, Shelton did not hear about the wedding in advance.

“Blake was not given a heads-up and doesn’t know her new husband,” a source
told Us exclusively at the time. “Since they split they have had almost zero contact.”
