13. Mechanical Ventilation System
All sheet metal ductwork shown on the Drawings, specified or required shall be of a
standard construction ductwork to DW141 and erected in a first class workman like
manner. The ductwork shall be constructed of galvanized sheet steel where
specified, or required to meet requirements of acoustic treatment and noise
criteria and shall be provided with interior insulation. Ducts shall confirm accurately
to the dimensions indicated on the Drawings and shall be straight and smooth on the
inside with joints neatly finished.
13.1.1 General :
a) Where ducts are lined with interior insulation, the dimensions indicated on
the Drawings shall be of the net free area after insulation is applied.
Ducts shall be anchored securely so as to be completely free from
vibration under all conditions of operation.
b) Sheet metal ducts shall be properly braced and reinforced with stee l
angles or other structural members approved by the engineer. Unless
otherwise required, the internal ends of all slip joints shall be installed in
the direction of flow.
c) Finished work shall show no flaking or peeling within 6mm of a cut edge.
The sheet metal ducts and stiffeners shall conform to the current edition of
the "American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, Air-conditioning
Engineer's Guide" as regards construction and gauge of materials for low-
pressure systems, except as otherwise specified or indicated.
d) All ductwork in the finished areas shall be run parallel to the beams
wherever possible. All outlets openings and open ends shall be kept
closed with sheet metal caps during construction.
e) Rectangular ducts shall be constructed by breaking the corner and
grooving the longitudinal seams. Elbows and transformation section may
be formed with Pittsburgh corner seams but complicated fittings shall be
constructed with double seams. Angle bracing shall be of steel and shall
be carried out on all four sides of ducts. All bracing to be in accordance
with the current edition of the "ASHRAE Guide"
13.1.2 Elbows :
a. Duct shall be built with curves and bends, where indicated, to effect an
easy flow of air. Curved elbows shall have a center line radius at least
equal 75% of the width of the duct. All duct curves shall be equipped with
approved single thickness vanes.

b. Vertical ducts shall have full size bends where horizontal branches are
taken off unless otherwise indicated.
c. Where square elbows are used in changing direction, the Contractor shall
furnish and install approved duct-turns but only approved aerodynamically
correct vanes will be considered for approval. These duct-turns must be
free from vibration when the system is in operation.
d. Test wells made up of a brass nipple with caps are to be fixed into the
duct or casing on the downstream side of each fan.
13.1.3 Hangers :
c) Straphangers shall be not less than 25mm x 3mm thick and shall be
extended along the bottom of the duct and fastened to the bottom and
sides of the duct by bolts and rivets. Straphangers shall support duct at
each joint.
g) Horizontal and vertical hangers shall be spread not more than 2.5 meters
apart or approved by the Engineer.

13. Mechanical Ventilation System
All side wall supply outlets shall be of the double deflection type, having vertical
front bars and horizontal back bars and fitted with key operated opposed blade
dampers. Gaskets to be fitted.
The diffusers shall be furnished with supply volume dampers and equalizing grids
as furnished by the diffuser's manufacturer. Volume controls for these outlets
shall be accessible through the outlet from below the ceiling and shall maintain
their setting when adjusted. Each diffuser shall be provided with a sponge rubber
or felt gasket and angle ring or frame for securing to ductwork. Return diffusers
(RAD) shall be identical to supply diffusers (SAD) except that the equalizing grid
can be eliminated. Diffusers to be of the type and shape indicated on Drawings.
a) Where these are placed in a position such that return and supply grilles
can be seen together then return grilles must match supply grilles.
b) Where return grilles are located away from supply grilles they can be fixed
pattern with horizontal bars. Exhaust air grilles (EAG) should comply to this
Clause.
Door grilles to be of the inverted V-blade shall not permit vision through the
grille. Blades to be 12mm apart. Minimum free area to be 60%. Louvers to be of
the double frame type with a frame each side of the door. Supply as indicated on
Drawings.
Wherever necessary the contractor shall provide suitable access openings, doors
and frames to permit inspection, operation and maintenance of all filters,
controls, bearings or other apparatus. Door shall be of double construction, of
not less than 20 gauge metal sheet and shall have sponge rubber gaskets around
their entire parameter. On insulated ductwork the space between the inner and
outer door sheets shall be insulated the same as specified as for ductwork. All
doors in sheet metal shall have airtight seals and shall be hung on heavy flat
hinges and shall be secured in the closed position by means of wing type nuts
and screws or icon operated catches.
