Introduction to product development

To accomplish success in today’s competing international market, companies are

progressively developing new products. The link between problem and solving efficiency
is the growing interesting factor for any company. Without innovation in business, the
marketers cannot grab the attention of buyers. The apparel industry is always seeking
information of operation to execute in mass customization. The RMG industry had to work on
short lead time, price, and quality products and so on with special attention to build a long term,
successful & sustainable industry. Within this competition, consumers have become
more changeable in their preferences and more difficult to forecast. That’s why the apparel
industry had to redesign the Design & Product development process for mass production. The
concept of design & product development (DPD)in RMG industry is still new. In today’s
competitive market DPD can work as a key to solve problems. To become successful in todays’
globally integrated world, apparel manufacturers are trying to be more efficient, more flexible.
Firms must develop new products for international markets as it is the key drivers of business
in today’s competitive environment. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the Bangladesh
RMG industry as a prominent supplier in the global market, the product and market
composition needs special attention. Product quality, innovativeness, design, distribution
networks etc. are considered to measure completeness of any industry. The RND
(Research & Development Department) not only fulfil customers demand but also offers
different range of collection and make different strike off of embellishment like print,
embroidery patchwork etc.

Trend Analysis Report

Men’s Style Trend Concept S/S 21

● Transform - where Designs reconcile past and present, light and dark & nature
and technology to create a sustainable fashion concept for the future.

Main features of Men’s fashion S/S 21-In the trend of S/S Men’s fashion 21
“Transform” we found that menswear moves in this Direction where designs combine
technology with nature to create a sustainable fashion look.

4|Page
● Smart looks will get smarter: In general, smart casual
means neat chinos or a pair of dark-coloured jeans with
a shirt, a blazer and a pair of leather shoes. Your outfit
should be well-fitting but slightly less formal than a
business casual business professional style.

● Lighten garment’s layers: Lightweight fabrics and garment’s constructions is

the key for summer utility looks and layered style. Here, transparency trends
can be created with technical sheers and layered photo prints.

5|Page
● Be proactive with sustainability: Here we see trends for utility clothing for
sustainable fashion. For example: Safari jacket, Cargo pant and chore jacket.

6|Page
● Design customization and up cycling: It is observed that taste for
customization and up cycling fashion is growing within menswear –especially
for Technical utility clothing.

● Trans formal wear:

Younger generation’s moves from street wear to tailoring and hybrid

looks. Functional features in formal wear are taken from sportswear.
Such as the blazer with high-performing, moisture wicking or anti-
crinkle fabrics.

styling by exploring layered transparency

● Here silhouettes for shirts, shorts should be lightweight with

layered prints and printed sheer fabric.

Suggested theme:

● Photogram techniques
● Digital prints with alien textures

Outdoor Oddity

Suggested theme:

● Outdoor heritage place

● Classic heritage materials

10 | P a g e
Neo classical Suggested theme:
● Classic costume
● Street wear

Confident check: Focus on classics with a twist – think huge scale bicolor ginghams,
amplified madras, and classic tartan checks, updated or subverted with mismatched panels,
heavier yarn interest, or smoother, more technical sporty looks.

11 | P a g e
Customized colour: Use simple fabrics such as lawns, cambric’s drills, twills and
chambrays, and take a sustainable approach to colour. Example include emulating dip-dye
and bleach laundries using photographic printing; using up waste dyes; hand-printing and
roller-printing with eco and vegetal dyes; also, we get to see more customized colours.

Reflective Shine:

Create simple bicolour tonic fabrics with more laundered taffeta touches, and develop softer
twill and satin weaves for a relaxed but luxurious hand-feel. Use reflective inclusions to give
fabrics a changeable character under different lighting conditions. Breathable, rain-proofed,
packable and washable benefits are a must here.

12 | P a g e
Start-up uniform: Combine classic tailoring, denim and work wear to create a new everyday
office uniform, which feels smart without adhering to specific dress codes.

Soft-focus geometrics: Geometric tile patterns will move beyond their traditional territory of
neck wear and vintage shirting to make waves in sports and street wear.

13 | P a g e
Hyper camouflage: Experiment with a mixed-media jacquard approach by overlaying classic
twill and herringbone visuals with camouflage and animal-skin motifs (for example, leopard
and zebra). Similarly, and prints and embroideries to classic camouflage patterns for a thrifty
mix and match collaged approach.

That’s why we have developed our shirt’s design by generating or recognize ideas, alternatives,
or possibilities.

Theme board with brief

Our first theme name is “Touch of The Flower”. We have developed our five Shirt design
from this inspiration board.

Touch of The
Flower

Flowers are one of nature’s most beautiful gifts to man and it would not be wrong to say that
the blooming of a flower in itself symbolizes life. Once a flower blooms, everyone attracts by
the colour of the flowers. Since flowers have been used over the ages for decoration as well,
many types of flowers are grown in house gardens and nurseries. Florists sell beautiful
bouquets of these all around the year. Different types of flowers are found all over the world
and many of them have varieties of rare collars.

That’s why we have developed our shirt’s design by using different kinds of floral collars,
shape, figures etc. according to this inspiration board.

Our last theme name is “Back to Ikat”. we have developed our other five Shirt
design from this inspiration board.

17 | P a g e
Back to Ikat

Inspiration board

Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior
to dyeing and weaving the fabric. In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or
bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed.

Ikat is produced in many traditional textile centres around the world, from India to Central
Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Africa, and Latin America.

Then it come to our mind that we can develop our product by busing this theme and we have
designed according to this theme. It’s all about traditional ikat.

Conclusion

To accomplish success in today's competing international market, companies are progressively

developing new products. The link between problem and solving efficiency is the growing
interesting factor for any company. Without innovation in business, the marketers cannot grab
the attention of buyers. The apparel industry is always seeking information of operation to
execute in mass customization. There is a huge benefit of expansion of design and product
development section for a sustainable readymade garment (RMG) in Bangladesh.

In this course we have learned the whole process of developing new product and understand
the whole process. Now we can figure out the process of developing a new garment. From
inspired “Ikat” we developed a new men’s woven long sleeve shirt mainly focusing on ikat
printing. From this course we learned collecting inspiration, sourcing and many more. This will
help us for our future career in RMG sector.
