What is Sustainable Packaging?

Sustainable

of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource
is not depleted or permanently damaged
Types of Sustainable Packaging
● Biodegradable-materials made from animal, plant, or mineral-based sources,
designed to break down naturally, naturally occurring microorganisms degrade
these materials into near harmless compounds

● Compostable-materials that break down in a controlled environment, must be

subjected to heat, pressure and a healthy population of microorganisms over time,
designed to release nutrients and add value to soil once they break down

In 2014, out of the 258 million tons of municipal solid waste generated in the US, more
than 63 percent was of packaging materials (for food and other purposes) and, overall,
only 35 percent (89 million tons) was recycled or composted.
