I. Give the meaning of the following words: (2)
a) eloquent: clearly expressing or indicating something, fluent in speaking
b) painstakingly: with great care, thoroughly
c) Was Tetsugen a compassionate person? Give one reason for your answer. (2)
Ans. Yes, Tetsugen was a compassionate person. When the heavy rains caused a great flood, he
used all the money that he had to help the victims.
Even during the epidemic spread, when money was needed for medicine and treatment, he gave all
the money he had collected to the aid the ones who needed it.
e) What is the significance of this project for the Japanese people? (2)
Ans. The sutras were printed in Japan and the original printing blocks used for that edition are still
preserved in the Obaku monastery in Kyoto, Japan.
III. In not more than 50 words, explain the Japanese like to say that the first two invisible
editions of the sutras are far superior to the last one.
