1 Overview
1.1 Introduction
ZXSDR R8863 (hereinafter R8863) is the distributed Remote Radio Unit (RRU) used in
ZTE Uni-RAN total solution, It is designed with 3 transmitters. Based on the common
ZTE new generation RRU platform, R8863 can work in GSM, UMTS or LTE single mode
or Multi-Mode in the same frequency band.
The document is designed to give an overview of the characteristics of R8863, its key
benefits, the architecture, functionality and services, as well as the system capabilities.
1.2 Benefits
The compact RRU design enables operators to uses only one R8863 module
instead of three RRUs for one three-cell site. Higher integration brings fewer
modules, less space, lower load-bearing requirements and faster installation
procedure.
Passive thermal dissipation design also contributes to power saving and less noisy.
The operation and maintenance of one single wireless network with fewer modules
is much simpler than multiple system networks. Fewer engineers are required and
less implementation to be taken for system interworking or upgrade.
R8863 and one Base Band Unit (BBU) form a complete BTS/NodeB, implementing radio
transmission in the covered area, controlling radio channels and realizing the
communication with the Base Station Controller (BSC/RNC) or EPC. It supports indoor
and outdoor applications.
2 Product Architecture
R8863 consists of transceiver (TRX), power amplifier (PA), duplexer (DFL), power (PWR)
and lightning protection module (PIB), as shown in Figure 2-2.

The software system of R8863 can be divided into operating support layer and
application layer.
GSM/UMTS Functions
OMC-B OSS
Linux
Hardware (BSP)
The operating support layer provides the functions of OSS, while OAM, DBS, BRS,
BRACS and SCS serve different BTS modes.
Bearer Access Control Sub-system (BRACS) controls the access to bear layer.
System Control Sub-system (SCS) controls the power supplying and active/standby
switching.
Operation Support Sub-system (OSS) is the support layer in this entire framework, which
is a hardware platform for running software and provides basic functions like scheduling,
timer, memory management, communication, sequencing control, monitoring, alarming
and logging.
Board Support Package (BSP) is the software closely connected with the board
hardware and supports Real Time Operation Support Sub-system (RT OSS) to work on
the board.
2.5 Functionality
Supports three sectors with one way transmitting and two-way receiving for each
sector.
Supports 2T2R for one cell by combination of two R8863s which can optimize LTE
spectrum efficiency greatly and improve network uplink performance.
