Learning outcome

34.7 Identify types of behaviour that can make riding a bicycle more dangerous, including
carrying a passenger, riding against the flow of traffic, ignoring traffic lights and signs, riding
without good brakes, failing to signal and swerving unexpectedly.

Objectives: Students will be able to:

. Identify 1-4 things you should not do while riding a bicycle.

. Match bicycle hand signals with their correct name.

. Apply knowledge of bicycle safety by answering 1-5 true and false questions given.

. Demonstrate how to use hand signals while riding a bicycle.

Student note: Bicycle Safety (cut and place in child note book or a folder)

Bicycle Safety

 Wear a Properly Fitted Bicycle Helmet.


 Put reflective stickers on your helmet so drivers can see you better.
 Do not use headphones while riding bicycle.

Bicycle check-up:

 Make sure your seat, handlebars are tight and check your brakes to be sure they are
working well
 Check your tires to make sure they have enough air and the right amount of tire pressure.
 Only one person should be on the bicycle.

Road Rules:

 Always check both sides before making a turn or crossing the streets.
 Ride on the right in the same direction as other vehicles.
 Always ride with your hands on the handlebars.
 Always obey all traffic signs.

Bicycle Signals:

 Left turn: hold your arm straight out to the left and ride forward slowly.
 Stop: After checking behind you, bend your elbow, pointing your arm downward in an
upside down "L" shape and come to a stop.
 Right turn: After checking behind you, bend your elbow, holding your arm up in an "L"
shape, and ride forward slowly. (Or, hold your right arm straight out from your side.

Instruction to Parents

Help children understand the importance of practicing bicycle safety.

Help children learn road rules while riding a bicycle.

Help students learn how to check up bicycles before using it.

Help students learn how to use hand signals when riding a bicycle.
