International QCA

Paper Development Workshop

4th Edition, Online

25th-26th November 2020

2

Welcome!

We are very pleased to welcome you to the International QCA Paper Development Workshop 2020!

The International QCA Paper Development Workshop 2020 provides a unique platform for researchers
working on papers involving QCA to meet QCA experts, get feedback on their on-going research and learn
about the latest methodological developments in QCA. The workshop is interdisciplinary and interactive
and allows for in-depth discussions and individual feedback from internationally renowned QCA scholars.

This year the International QCA Paper Development Workshop 2020 will take place as an online event.
We arranged the program to account for the different time zone of the participants to allow for maximum
attendance from different time zones.

The core activity of the workshop is composed of parallel roundtable sessions, where participants will
receive individual feedback on their papers by QCA experts. In addition to the usual roundtable sessions,
this year we will organise the ”Face your QCA challenges” group discussions where participants will be
able to discuss with some experts further, targeted challenges they are facing when performing QCA. A
panel discussion will close the main activities of the event. For this edition, three early-career QCA
researchers will talk and discuss with the participants about how to valorise the added value of QCA in
their research and in their career.

Finally, the second edition of the “Best Paper Award” will also take place and winners will be awarded on
the second day of the workshop.

Practical information

The international QCA Paper Development Workshop (PDW) is organised online this year. On 25th
November 2020, the workshop starts at 12:30 (PM) and on 26th of November at 14:30 (2:30 PM) CET
(Central European Time, Zurich/Rome/Berlin). The Zoom access details are the following:

Meeting ID: 743 546 2266

Passcode: 682157

Link: https://uni-bamberg.zoom.us/j/7435462266

Access to the Zoom meeting is possible 30 minutes before the event starts. Please check your video and
audio settings before the event.

On 25th November, there are two sessions of roundtables. Please check the list below to see which
roundtable you have been assigned to. In a roundtable, participants can discuss their paper together with
other 2-3 papers and receive feedback from experts. We also warmly recommend participants to read the
other papers assigned to their roundtables to take part in the discussion with informed comments.

On 26th November, the “Face your QCA challenges” group discussions are organised. In these group
discussions, some experts will be available to discuss a number of topics that we selected and grouped
when looking at the three main questions and issues participants indicated when submitting their full
papers. The group discussions are meant to offer participants further feedback on specific challenges they
are experiencing in developing their research. In addition, on 26th November a panel debate will take place
where three early-career QCA researchers will talk about how QCA helped them in positioning their
research in their fields and in advancing in their careers.

During the coffee/tea breaks, the main Zoom room will remain active, and breakout rooms will be organized
to talk in small groups. Coffee/tea breaks are optional, but highly recommended to stimulate interaction
among the participants and experts. We will assign participants and experts randomly to each “coffee/tea
breakout room” and, if possible and upon request, we might do it manually. In case, participants and
experts can also autonomously organise their own coffee/tea break by leaving the main Zoom meeting and
then come back later when the event resumes.

The Zoom chat will be available to allow participants and experts to communicate with each other, also 1:1.
The full participant lists is provided at the end of this booklet, where everybody’s email is also indicated to
allow communication among the participants and experts.

Please note that some technical issues and connection problems could occur, also from the side of the co-
organisers; in that case, please be patient and we will try to resume the event or solve the issue as soon as
possible. Also, please do not hesitate to contact the co-organisers per e-mail should there be any questions
before or during the workshop.
