Hydraulic Structures (CIEG 304)

Date of assignment: 7th April, 2021 Date of Submission: 7th May, 2021

1. Figure(1) shows the section concrete gravity dam, neglecting earthquake forces and
taking unit weight of water and concrete γw and γc as 10 kN/m3 and 24 kN/m3 and
allowable stress in concrete may be taken as 2500 kN/m2, Determine
i. Maximum vertical stress on the heel and toe of the dam
ii. The major principal stress at the toe of the dam
iii. Intensity of the shear stress on the horizontal plane near the toe of the dam
iv. Also find the factor of safety against overturning and sliding and check them
either within permissible limit or not

2. Figure (2) shows the section of the concrete gravity dam. Examine the stability of the
dam section. Earthquake forces may be taken as equivalent to 0.1g and 0.05g for
horizontal and vertical forces respectively. Uplift may be taken as equal to the
hydrostatic pressure at the heel and toe of the dam and is considered to act over the
60% of the area of the section. Tail water of 6.0 m is assumed when reservoir is full
and no tail water in the empty case. Also indicate the various kinds of the stresses on
the heel and toe of the dam. (unit weight of water and concrete γw and γc are 10 kN/m2
and 24 kN/m3 and take allowable stress in the concrete as 3000 kN/m2)
Do calculation for following cases (examine the stability analysis and also find out
different stresses induced at the toe and heel of the dam section)
(I) Reservoir empty case (i)(i) Reservoir empty case and vertical earthquake
induced inertia acts on upward direction and horizontal earthquake induced
force acts towards upstream case (i)(ii) Reservoir empty and vertical
earthquake induced inertia force acts towards downward direction and
horizontal earthquake induced inertia force acts towards upstream
(II) Reservoir full case (II) (i) Reservoir full with uplift and vertical earthquake
induced inertia force acts towards upward direction and horizontal
earthquake induced inertia force acts towards downstream direction, (II) (ii)
reservoir full and no uplift while vertical earthquake induced inertia force acts
towards upward direction and horizontal earthquake induced inertia force
acts towards downstream direction.)

3. Design the practical profile of a gravity dam of stone masonry, given the following
data
i. R.L. of the base of the dam =1450 m.
ii. R.L. of flood level of the dam = 1480.5 m.
iii. Specific gravity of the masonry =2.4
iv. Safe compressive stress of the masonry =1200 kN/m2
v. Height of the waves = 1.0 m.
vi. unit weight of water and concrete γw and γc are 10 kN/m2 and 24 kN/m3
