Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: National Holiday Concept Map

Content Area/Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: Students are able to identify and discuss national holidays. Students
are able to describe the people and/or events celebrated.

Technology Standard Addressed: Students will be able to communicate and collaborate with other
students about national holidays.

Guiding Question(s): What is your favorite national holiday that you celebrate? Why is it your
favorite? Do you know the reason we celebrate it?

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us, This tool will be used by me (the teacher) as well as the
students. I will have a concept map with national holidays done for the class to discuss as a whole.
The students will then work in pairs of three to discuss a holiday they all enjoy. After discuss the
group will make a concept map using Bubble.us about said holiday.

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or
Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven and student-led. Students should have “Voice and Choice” in the activities,
selecting the topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Your student’s projects must be shared locally or globally to meet this level.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson supports and enhances learning by allowing
students to talk with one another about their own experiences with holidays. UDL is designed to
include all students, this lesson allows for each student to discuss their holidays whether the same
or different form others. For engagement this lesson will be done with others where students are
able to bounce back and forth and keep motivated by each other. Representation I will have the
concept map printed out and on computer screen for students to see for examples. As the teacher I

will also go over how it was made and put together.

Lesson idea implementation: This lesson will be introduced by asking students what a national
holiday is. As a class we will discuss and come up with national holidays. I will then pass out and pull
up my concept map of national holidays. We will touch on the points I have listed. The students will
then be split into groups of three, they will be asked to discuss the national holidays they celebrate.
For their discuss I will use the leading question of “what makes the holiday special for you”. After
discussing as a group for a while, students will begin their own concept map on bubbl.us about the
holiday of their choice. I will keep in mind of what group is doing what and try to not allow more the
two groups to do the same holiday. In their concept map they will need to put why the holiday is
celebrated, how it is celebrated, and why it is their favorite. I will conclude this lesson by having each
group come up and present their concept map. The children will be assessed by a worksheet I have
made where they are to match the holiday with a related picture and a description of the holiday.
For higher learning students can begin researching a holiday of their choice individually.
Reflective Practice: I feel this will impact student learning by having them express their own holidays
and views. I believe another tool that could be used would be Weebly (really like, will use in future)
as a class we could take their concept maps and put them on pages dedicated to certain holidays. In
order to expand that we could include other classes/rooms as well, make it a grade level
contribution. To extend learning we could move into research about one or two holidays at a time,
so students will have a better understanding of why we celebrated.
