What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal for this lesson is to use technology to create a podcast that identifies
a national holiday and explains the people or event it celebrates.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that
apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are
guided by the teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned
to the student and mostly practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select
the topic of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning
goal. The teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning
processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing

projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the
project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog,
presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:

After learning about the 11 national holidays students will learn how to create a
podcast. I will explain what a podcast is to the class. I will remind them of the podcast
they listened to and were introduced to in the flipped classroom activity that
introduced the lessons topic to them. I will play the podcast again to give them an
example of the podcast. I will introduce the learning goal to the students. Their
learning goal will be to create a podcast about one of the holidays they learned about.
To create a more efficient lesson. I will create 11 groups to account for the 11 holidays.
I will have the groups tell me some of the holidays they want to focus on. With that
knowledge, I will assign them a holiday based on their choices. Since students are not
old enough to use Anchor, I will have them record an audio file. I will take their audio
file and use my account to upload their audio and create the podcast. They will
brainstorm ideas of how they want to explain their holiday. All I am looking for is that
they identify the holiday they are talking about and tell me the people or event the
holiday celebrated. I would also like each student in the group to say a sentence. Ex.”
Independence Day is a National Holiday. It celebrates the day that America declared its
independence from Great Britain.” After they finish their audio, I will pull my Anchor
account up on the screen and look at the music options with the students. We will pick
an option together. I will then upload their audios into a separate podcast. I will label
the podcast by their group number or holiday to keep their information private. After
the podcasts are complete, I will play all the podcasts for the class. They students will

be able to display their hard work. After each podcast, I will allow students to share
their thoughts with the creators. This will allow students to give kind feedback to their
peers. This will be how we conclude the lesson.
Managing student learning:

Using this tool will encourage students to become active social learners. Students will
be able to pick a holiday and work together in a group to complete the podcast. This
will promote communication and collaboration. I will keep students on task by creating
time limit goals to have their work done. I will let them know where they should be in
their project by certain times. This will keep them engaged in their project. Students
will also submit a brainstorm of their podcast for review. This will help keep them on
task.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:

My lesson idea supports all students by providing an accessible tool for students to use.
Students are going to be recording an audio to share information about their chosen
holiday. This activity will enhance the learning activity because it supports
engagement. Student are given options on what holiday they want to complete. They
will be more engagement because they have autonomy in their learning.
Reflection:

I feel like this will be beneficial to student learning. Students will be able to display their
knowledge and learn about a new tool to help them share their knowledge. It will be a
great learning experience for students. Young students benefit from audio submissions
because it allows them to share things they may not know how to write yet. I look
forward to listening to the finished podcasts at the end of the lesson. Students will be
able to share their knowledge through their own personalities. Since there aren’t strict
requirements, it will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.
