personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

WHAT IS IT
“Over the course of speaking with almost 500 leaders for my weekly
“Corner Office” series, I’ve asked every one of them, “How do you hire?” Their
answers are always insightful because after years of interviewing countless
job candidates, they’ve learned the best approaches to help them get right to
the core of who a candidate is and how he or she will work with a team. Learn
the strategies these chief executives have developed through trial and error to
help you go beyond the polished résumés, pre-screened references and
scripted answers, to hire more creative and effective members for your team.
And if you’re on the other side of the job hunt, you can gain insight on what
your interviewer is really looking for in a candidate.”

The Importance of Hiring the Right People
Often, it is much easier to know who the right person is for your team when
you have experienced hiring the wrong people. The right person is someone that fits
in and that adds to your company, instead of taking away from what you have
created.
When you hire the right people in a company, you will be able to gain the
following benefits:
It’s no secret that the hiring process is expensive. Not only do your
hiring managers have to take time out of their busy schedules, but you
also have to spend money on criminal background checks, skills tests,
job board postings, and more. When you hire the wrong person, you
have to conduct the same hiring process more than once, essentially
doubling the cost. A good hire avoids both the second hiring process
and the added cost.
• You won’t have to deal with the damage that a bad hire can do to
your company
Bad hires can have a negative impact for a lot of different reasons.
Some of them can pose a safety risk to customers or colleagues (hence the
need to run criminal background checks). Others might steal from your
company, hurt your client relations through incompetence, or create a
negative atmosphere in the workplace. Bad hires will almost always
damage your business in one way or another. Avoiding bad hires will keep
your enterprise untarnished.
When your company culture goes downhill, word will always get
out. If your employees aren’t saying good things about your business
(or if they are leaving because they are no longer happy with their jobs),
those things reflect poorly on you as an employer. If you post the same
-4-
job twice in a six-month period, that also reflects poorly on you as an
employer. Hiring the right people will protect your reputation on both
fronts.
Every time you hire someone, you have to turn down dozens of
other applicants—a fair number of whom are probably qualified for the
position. If you find the right person, this trade off doesn’t sting so
badly. When you make a bad hire, it can be frustrating to know that
you let better candidates slip through your fingers. Sure, you might still
have contact information for some of the people who were in your
applicant pool the first time, but the most qualified people have
probably already found other jobs and won’t be too eager to come
running back to a company that already rejected them.
Hiring the right people today can reduce the number of people you’ll
need to hire in the future. Candidates who are interested and invested in
your business will be open to growing their role as your business matures.
Employees who are capable of taking ownership of their work and their place
within your company will not only help your business prosper, but they’ll
work to stabilize and improve your company at all levels of growth.

Your business will benefit if you know what you are trying to accomplish
in hiring. For many entrepreneurial businesses, hiring capable, and self-
motivated employees provides a competitive advantage. Prospective hires
should have not only great technical skills but also the motivation to make
the business a success.
-5-
• Embody the company’s values.
• Work hard and work smart.
• Have the specific skills required.
• Learn quickly when new skills are needed.
• Are able to work with little supervision.
• Take initiative to make things happen.
• Are comfortable in the uncertainty of an entrepreneurial situation.
• Are flexible to business needs and changing requirements.
The key in hiring for your company is not necessarily finding people who
thrive in uncertainty but rather finding people who thrive in the kind of
organizational culture your company strives for. Resist the urge to hire people
just because they share the same personality traits and background as you.
Businesses benefit from having different points of view to challenge and
develop the company into the future.
