About Human Power Vehicle
This project was carried out as a team for an international event
that is the name itself suggests that all vehicles that are
powered only by human muscular strength.
The large area of HPV can be divided into many categories.
The most important vehicle is the bicycle , but one can find
HPV's in the air, in and under the water and also on
the rail.
Some HPV's are built for the competition to get faster and
faster like our’s, but mostly are for daily use.

➢ ASME (Hosting authority)

ASME stands for American Society Of Mechanical Engineers.

Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading industrialists,
ASME has grown through the decades to include more than
100,000 members in 140+ countries. Thirty-two thousand of
these members are students.

➢ Human Powered Vehicle Challenge:

Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) is an
engineering design and innovation competition that allows
students to connect to world and apply engineering principles
through the design, fabrication, and racing of human-
powered vehicles.

Resources for the project

AISI 1020 cold rolled steel pipes are used for constructing main
frame as well as steering system of the vehicle.

Disk brake and shoe brake are used to facilitate braking action.

Main Reason For Building This Project

We undertook the opportunity to work for this project to gain the

practical and designing skills related to mechanical engineering
like working on Solidworks, Ansys ,cutting , welding operations
etc. Also, We can compete with the teams across India and work
according to international standards. In this project, We used
Analysis For different Systems of HPV including Suspension,
Braking, Transmission. Ansys Software played wide role in
analysis of parts of HPV. Ansys Software helps us to work with
ease and Calculate any Load and its effect on System of HPV.
Different parts such as Brakes, Forks were Directed Used in
Ansys software for easy installation in HPV.

BRAKING SYSTEM

Braking is used for decelerating and stopping the vehicle in

motion.
Brakes are of various types like disk brakes, shoe brakes ,
band brakes etc.

DISK BRAKE SHOE BRAKE

STEERING SYSTEM
Steering is used to facilitate turning and balancing
action while riding a vehicle.
Steering system for a vehicle depends on number and
position of wheels on it.

SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Suspension in our HPV is quite different from that which is

normally being used in general cycles or other HPVs. General cycles
or HPVs generally has vertical or inclined suspension which acts
when the load or jerk is normal to the ground.
Here the primary jerk is absorbed by the shocker but that jerk
4
generates residual stress in the clamping section that transferred to
the chassis and theses system do not deal with the stress developed
due to the braking.
VEHICLE SUSPENSION THEORY: The shocker should be Optimizely used and positioned
such that they absorb all the vibration and oscillations of the vehicle without any extra load
bared on the chassis. For making the vehicle durable for the
long and continuous ride, it is necessary that both i.e., vehicle and the passengers should be in their comfort zone. The
unwanted oscillatory rolling of a vehicle especially in two-wheelers is a great obstacle in controlling and handling the
vehicle. The jerks during the ride are harmonious to the passenger as well as to the chassis of the vehicle.

TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

A transmission for a human powered vehicle (HPV), for transmitting a reciprocating pedal movement
into a rotational movement, comprising a pair of pedals suspended for reciprocating movement
,whereby gearing ratio has a minimum value when the respective pedal is in an intermediate position
between its extended position and its retracted position, a first major value when the respective pedal
is in its retracted position, and a second major value, when the respective pedal is in its extended
position, whereby the minimum value is smaller than either of the first and the second major value

Conventional bicycles use a common propulsion mechanism consisting of pedal on a crank driving a
round crank gear that is connected to sprockets by a chain that drives the rear wheel of the bike.

Power transmission systems for a bicycle made use of chains, which from a chain wheel at the crank means
drives a chain sprocket which is directly connected to the drive wheel hub
The most widely used and known transmission is chain transmission that is widely distributed, found to
be used in almost all types of bicycles. It is also important to know that we also use gears and cardan shafts.

Ansys Software is also used in many application purposes for analysis of different parts used in HPV.

FUTURE SCOPE OF HPV:

These vehicles are going to be the future. Even today such special vehicles are designed for movement within
a large institute.
INNOVATIVE DESIGN: As an HPV, there can be a lot of design of these cycles provide versatility in them and
any of them can be preferred according to the demand of work.
CHAINLESS TRANSMISSION: Many modifications like chainless assembly or idler gear transmission can be used
to increase the speed and efficiency of the vehicle.
IMPROVED BRAKING: Hydraulic brakes in place of mechanical brakes can be used to increase the braking
safety of the vehicle.
E-GADGETS/SENSORS: There is a lot more to think about its modification scope, as the whole idea
is new and demands innovation in every aspect. Even proximity sensors can be used to provide
extra support to the rider while riding and such a lot more
